1
Removing the Bench Mary Beth Carlson HSTD 386 Summer
2
The Problem The lake flooded, dock underwater. Newly rebuilt bench attached to dock is potentially damaged by waves, wakes and long term emersion in water.
3
Four corners of Bench secured to dock via brackets and screws
4
Due to wave action in water, the top of the screw is distorted. We have to guess the type of screw head.
5
We guess the screw head is a Phillips head. We tried a long Phillips head screw driver
6
Nope! Wrong guess We now assume the screw has a STAR head
7
New Problem No STAR head screw driver
8
Enter Battery operated drill with long extension and STAR head bit
9
New Problem Extension receiver too small for STAR head bit
10
Husband Frustrated #!!!#%&&##!!!!
11
Wife assembles socket extension with STAR head bit
12
New Problem STAR head bit will not lock into socket extension
13
Wife suggests Dust Tape Husband disagrees- He says there will be too much torque on bit and tape will not hold
14
Wife points out that torque would be on the socket/bit combination and the Duck tape would simply keep the bit from falling out of socket
16
New Problem – STAR bit isn’t working Still can’t see screw head because of wave action
17
Solution Wife presses thumb over screw head in hopes of getting the impression of screw head on skin. IT WORKS! We discover the screw head is a SQUARE head bit
18
Replace STAR bit with SQUARE bit -- Retape
19
Works like a champ
20
We are now able to remove all 8 screws and brackets from dock decking
21
Move bench to higher ground Hoping it will dry out and be saved for later summer use
22
Job well done! Wife is Proud Husband is happy his partner is SO smart
23
