0 A model for direct cataloguing in WorldCat Reiner Diedrichs Verbundzentrale des GBV (VZG) CBS-Partner Meeting, September 15th, 2015 Hamburg

Cataloguing in GBV: current situation Title data available within union catalogue (GVK): National Library (DNB), Library of Congress, Casalini German Union Catalogues: BVB, BSZ, hbz, HeBIS For manually catalogued titles more than 80 % of the descriptions are found in the GBV Union Catalogue, e.g.: All kind of material: books, journals, electronic resources, articles, maps, microforms, AV, etc. 1 Percent title take over (GVK 2013)%Total InuseNew Titles ULB Halle82,841.0007.052 UB Rostock81,146.6008.807 UB Greifswald87,535.9004.488 UB Braunschweig83,026.3004.471 SUB Göttingen (many old prints, special collections) 66,0140.90047.906

Cataloguing in GBV: current situation Low use of external sources via z39.50 (January to August 2015) 2 DbsIdDatabaseSearchesFull Presentations 1.1GVK1.373.4974.076.931 Z39.50 24.1SWB2.6431.691 24.2BVB2.5871.381 24.3hbz1.767665 24.6WorldCat8.22512.964 24.7OBV1.266369 24.8NEBIS1.244194 24.11LoC2.142576 24.14ABES1.509397

Cataloguing in GBV: electronic media The number of titles and holdings of electronic documents is increasing dramatically: 95 % of e-titles are imported from publishers or vendors 90 % of e-holdings are generated by offline programs:  e-book packages, patron driven acquisition (PDA)  very library specific holding informations 3 New titles and Holdings 20132012 GVKTitlesHoldingsTitlesHoldings p-books513.0001.590.000460.0001.472.000 e-books863.0004.536.000429.0001.859.000 p-journals18.00055.00021.00074.000 e-journals16.000630.00014.000570.000

Availability of metadata: e.g. Middle and South America Quality of metadata: Unique title entities for data exchange with libraries, networks, publishers, vendors, discovery, linked data, etc. Uniform cataloguing and application rules Catalogue enrichment Subject classification (no title without DDC!) Table of contents Use of authority files and identifiers (e.g. ISNI, ORCID, VIAF) Content clustering (FRBR, GLIMR) Library back office Communication with publishers and vendors for metadata and supplier data exchange Electronic resource management 4

Full data suit from July 2012 with 115 libraries from more than 250 cataloguing libraries (ilns), import finished spring 2014 The online synchronization is tested currently productive Outstanding are 11.000.000 updates since July 2012 Not all type of material can be send to WorldCat, e.g. articles, volume Records from serials, manuscripts, objects, local cataloguing Not all libraries want to catalogue in WorldCat There are open questions about format, import and matching  WorldCat can’t be the only cataloging platform  We need a combined model with WorldCat and CBS 5

6 WorldCat - OCN - Bibliographic Description - Library symbol Regional CBS - OCN  PPN - Bibliographic Description - Complex Holding Information Catalogue Client WinIBW / Record Builder? Pusher: - Regional updates e.g. automatically added/ deleted holdings New titles New holdings Update titles Delete Holdings Add titles with OCN Add copy records update titles Delete holdings Add local titles LBS4 and other LMS

None of the partners can cover all requirements The partners have different tasks at different levels: OCLC WorldCat: Offer bibliographic metadata and catalogue enrichment Define an unique identifier for bibliographic items: OCN (primary cataloguing) Make libraries visible to the world CBS partners: Allow “local” cataloguing, e.g. from WorldCat not supported record types, non WorldCat libraries Support complex library specific data, local authority files, etc. Support services to libraries, e.g. add holdings to ebooks, manipulate library specific information, etc. This model is used since years for cataloguing serials in Germany  ZDB 7
