3 GRADING POLICY FOR LCMS Lewis and Clark Middle School Common Grading Policy Creating a Culture of Responsibility Learning is a process. Assignments/Practice and assessments/evidence are valuable components in mastering content and demonstrating understanding. Assignments/Practice It is expected that assignments/practice will be turned in by the due date. Assessments/Evidence It is expected that students study and prepare for assessment/evidence as scheduled.

4 HOMEWORK, TESTS, AND PROJECTS Homework Time in class will be provided for students to complete their assignments and ask questions. If assignments are not completed in class, it is the student’s responsibility to finish the assignment at home. Most daily assignments are due the next school day. Projects/Tests Student agenda book, PowerSchool, and Teacher Website (Schoolwires) are places to look for due dates of projects and tests.

Quarter 2– The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; by Mark Twain and for their independent reading project they will pick a Newbery medal winner/ YRC/ or an award winning book. Quarter 3– The Diary of Ann Frank (play); by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett and a nonfiction book for their independent reading project, or they can pick The Children of Willesden Lane; by Mona Golabek and Lee Cohen (on their own) Quarter 4– a variety of Poetry, Prose, and Dramas and or their independent reading project they will pick a science fiction or fantasy novel. 6 SEVENTH GRADE CREDIT REQUIREMENTS 7 th Credit Requirement Life Science, Writing & Composition, World Civilization, CCSS Math 7, Lit & Strategies 10 credits—5 per class per semester must earn 8 out of 10 credits must have 60% or better on last day of semester lose credit if fail 2 consecutive semesters in a class lose credit if over the 6 unexcused absences per class per semester Graduation Requirement 56/60 credits

9 CLASS SYLLABUS FOR QUARTER 1 Welcome to Seventh Grade Literature and Reading Strategies Semester 1 Syllabus Unit 1 September - November State Standards addressed  Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development  Analyze elements of a story  Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters  Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development to provide an objective summary  Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions  Come to discussions prepared, having read or researched material  Follow rules for collegial discussions  Acknowledge new information expressed by others and, when warranted, modify their own views  Recognize the meaning of words based on seventh grade required root words (on district web site)  Consult general and specialized reference materials in both print and digital form to find the pronunciation of a word or clarify its precise meaning  Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases Sources used: Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings (novel), My Furthest Back Person (autobiography), Seventh Grade (short story), A Christmas Carol (drama), Scope magazine, independent reading book-student choice

10 SYLLABUS FOR QUARTER 2 Unit 2 November – January State Standards addressed  Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says  Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text  Explain how an author develops the point of view of the narrator or speaker in a text  Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history  Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text  Determine and analyze an author’s point of view or purpose in a text  Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text  Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic shape their presentations of key information by emphasizing different evidence  Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 7 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. 11 ABOUT ME I have been teaching for Eighteen years. I taught eighth grade at Meridian Middle School and I have been here since the schools was opened in 2000. I have been coaching for eleven years, mainly in cross country, and a couple of years of track. I enjoy teaching, reading, and being in middle school.
