Scientific Measurement PAGE 13-21

Essential Questions Why do scientists use a standard measurement system? What are some SI units of measure?

International System of Units (SI) A version of the metric system used by modern scientists

SI Prefixes Kilo (k) = 1,000 Deka (da)=10 No prefix=1 Centi (c)=0.01one,hundredth Milli (m)=0.001 One thousandth Micro = 0.000001 One millionth Nano (n) =0.000000001 One billionth

Length Mass Basic SI unit is the meter, frequently measured using meter stick or metric ruler Measure of the amount of mass in an object, basic SI unit is the kilogram (kg)

Weight Volume Measure of the force of gravity on an object, basic SI unit used for force is the newton (N) The amount of space taken up by an object, basic SI unit liter (L) or cubic centimeter

Density Measure of how much mass is contained in a given volume, SI unit for density kg/cubic meter Density = Mass / Volume

Time Temperature The second is the SI unit used to measure time The average kinetic energy in a substance Standard SI unit is Kelvin, but Celsius is more commonly used

Summary Write a summary of what you have learned today.
