Habitat Destruction:The Loss of the Coral Reef Kameron Hollins Biology 1312 Online crn:201520 University Of Houston Downtown

Introduction:  Coral Reef: area of rock consisting up of coral.  Location  Famous Reefs of the World  Plant or Animal??

Introduction (continued)  Biotic  Angelfish, boxfish, sea turtles, sponges  Abiotic  Temperature, sunlight, buoyancy, viscosity, light penetration, salts, gases and water density.  The Issue with Some Background

 Predators  Coral Bleaching  Human Interaction *Pollution *Overfishing *Overharvesting Some Ways Coral Reef is Being Harmed

Ecological Impact  Loss of Biological Diversity  Loss of food  Loss Of Blocking Shoreline Erosion  Loss of Habitat  Loss of Medicine  Loss of Nitrogen fixer

Economic Impact  Loss of Jobs  Loss of tourism and recreation  Extra Spending that could have been avoided  Fisheries  Shoreline Protection

Current Focus  How to stop or find better ways to help with negative human interaction that lead to negative impacts on the coral reef  Find ways to conserve plants and animals that live there  Help restore severely damaged coral reefs

Current Research  “The world is on the brink of a massive extinction event, according to the United Nations…… A Study earlier this year in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science said the current extinction period, known as the Holocene extinction event, may be the greatest event in the Earth's history and the first due to human actions. Unlike previous events, however, extinctions are happening over the course of decades rather than centuries. Recent studies suggest that a quarter of the world's species may go extinct by 2050.”(WorldWatchInstitute)  The Coral Restoration Foundation:protects and restores coral reefs through creating coral nurseries and transplanting corals into degraded reef areas.  The Nature Conservancy:Is where Concerned individuals can adopt a coral reef and donate to maintain its growth. Also proceeds of from this helps conduct research  The United States EPA or Environmental Protection Agency has many programs that contribute to the protection of coral reefs. These include research into the causes of coral reef deterioration and regulatory control programs for wastewater discharges, storm water runoff, and ocean dumping of wastes.
