3 ABSTRACT The world is moving towards e-learning and Pakistan is a part of the globe and has to face the challenges of globalization. The purpose of the study is to design and develop web Textbook website for ICT-integrated teacher education in Pakistan. The vision is to see Pakistan as a leader in e-learning and online teacher education in the world. The mission is to promote mobile and e- learning in Pakistan. The objective of the study is to design and develop an online e-learning system for ubiquitous learning and web-textbooks to facilitate ICT-integrated teacher education in Pakistan. The website has the characteristics to be adapted to mobile learning on any platform such as android, iPhone etc. It is a pilot study and is to be validated in various teacher education programs of different universities in Pakistan. 4 Introduction The world is moving towards e-governance in all fields of life including education. Pakistan as a member of the world community cannot keep itself away to become seclusive in the progress of the globe to be open and without borders in educational world. The phenomenon is seen in e-learning and m-learning system. ICT-integration in education demands that first integration of ICT be made in teacher education program. The new trends in education and pedagogy demand the use of educational technology, especially, the ICT. But, the use of ICT in turn requires and demands the courses and contents to be converted into a shape, form, design and format that is structurally feasible, usable and useful; having attraction and good impact on the learners i.e. user friendly. It also requires a website for e- content presentation and online connection, interaction, collaboration and communication. 5 5 The competency to convert the course content and textbooks from traditional make up to the technology-based web Textbooks demands the authors to be both technologist and educationist at the same time. The technology is modern and the experts in education of Pakistan are mostly having experience in the traditional textbooks and course contents preparations, presentation, evaluation and development. The writer of the web Textbook for teacher education has taken the help of a software engineering student to have technical support in the preparation of website and to fill the gap of technical expertise. So, this project is an educationist and software engineer student contribution in the field of teacher education in Pakistan. This study is designed to provide help to the learners for using online mobile-learning or e- learning through web Textbooks website and have educational opportunities in constructivist and virtual learning environment. 6 6 The methodology of the study is to explain and introduce various components of the website to the students for making the learning efficient and effective. The researcher studied and reviewed various research articles and developed a theoretical framework before designing the website http://www.alqalam.pk/ for developing web Textbooks and their use in e-learning and m-Learning system. http://www.alqalam.pk/ Statement of the Problem The problem of the study is stated as: Developing web Textbooks website for ICT-integrated teacher education through e-learning and m-learning system in Pakistan. DEVELOPING ONLINE E-LEARNING SYSTEM THROUGH WEB-TEXTBOOKS FOR ICT-INTEGRATED TEACHER EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN: A PILOT STUDY

7 7 Objectives of the Study The study was conducted keeping in view the following objectives: 1.To design and develop a web Textbooks website for e-learning and m-learning system. 2.To make teacher education of Pakistan ICT-integrated through web Textbooks presentation on e- learning system. 3.To promote ICT-integrated teacher education in Pakistan in constructivist and virtual learning environment. DEVELOPING ONLINE E-LEARNING SYSTEM THROUGH WEB-TEXTBOOKS FOR ICT-INTEGRATED TEACHER EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN: A PILOT STUDY

8 8 Research Questions The study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1.Was there any website designed for presenting course material on e-learning or m-learning system for teacher education in Pakistan? 2.Was there any possibility to integrate ICT into education system of Pakistan? 3.Has teacher education in Pakistan potentials for ICT-integration? Significance of the Study The study was significant because it could be used as a prototype for presentation of course materials / contents of teacher education program on e-learning and m-learning systems. That would help make teacher education in Pakistan ICT-integrated. DEVELOPING ONLINE E-LEARNING SYSTEM THROUGH WEB-TEXTBOOKS FOR ICT-INTEGRATED TEACHER EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN: A PILOT STUDY

9 9 Methodology of the Study The methodology of the study is to make review of the research articles and books for designing and developing web Textbook website in order to have conceptual clarity. The course materials available are developed by the researcher for ICT-integrated teacher education to be presented to students on e-learning and m-learning system. The website is designed and developed by a Software Engineering student of Swat University. The website will be validated in the session 2015 – 2016 for making it effective and standardized. Hence, the study is experimental and practical in nature for designing and developing course materials of teacher education in Pakistan in order to make it part of e-learning and m-learning system. 10 10 Review of Literature Khan (2015) while explaining new frontiers of teacher education through Open and Distance Education has made a thorough meta-analysis of available researches on e-learning and came to the conclusion that when ICT is integrated in teacher education it can be used in both face to face classrooms and Open, distance and flexible education systems. Similarly Khan (2015) concluded that there are potentials and possibilities of ICT-integrated teacher education in Pakistan. The details of literature review is based on Critical Discourse Analysis and it helped in developing the website www.alqalam.pk for content presentation and learning as discussed in the following data analysis section.www.alqalam.pk DEVELOPING ONLINE E-LEARNING SYSTEM THROUGH WEB-TEXTBOOKS FOR ICT-INTEGRATED TEACHER EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN: A PILOT STUDY
