Ultrasonic Flow: Principles of Operation Transit Time Doppler Installation www.bellflowsystems.co.uk Measurement Technology Overview

Transit time is also known as “Time of Flight” technology. Sound pulses are transmitted upstream and downstream between two elements mounted on the outside of the pipe. The two elements (transducers) alternate function between send and receive. V-Mode Configuration www.bellflowsystems.co.uk Transit Time Technology

Measurement Summary  Dynasonics transit time meters generate and transmit a synthesized waveform in both the upstream and downstream directions; approximately 3x/second.  After the waveform is transmitted, a precision delay is induced; the length of the delay is based on parameters such as pipe size and pipe wall thickness.  The upstream and downstream data are collected and compared with one another to determine difference time ( Δt ). www.bellflowsystems.co.uk

Transit Time Installation Three Mounting Modes for Series TFX Transducers W-ModeV-ModeZ-Mode Mount so that wires are in opposition www.bellflowsystems.co.uk

Transit Time Installation Place the second transducer at the proper calculated spacing and make small adjustments to achieve Signal Strength. Clamp the transducer at this position. www.bellflowsystems.co.uk

On very large pipes, small adjustments both lineally and radially may be required to achieve adequate signal strength (typically greater than 5). Also, slight twisting of the transducers can direct the sound. Note: higher signal strength does NOT correspond with higher accuracy www.bellflowsystems.co.uk Transit Time Installation

Doppler Ultrasonic Technology Ultrasonic frequencies in the range of 500,000 to 1,000,000 Hertz (500 kHz to 1 MHz) are generated by the flow meter and transmitted through the pipe wall into the liquid. The part of the flow meter that contacts the pipe is called the transducer. www.bellflowsystems.co.uk

Option 1: 180° is usually optimal, start with this set-up Option 2: Side-by-side is appropriate for larger pipes, very high solids content (>10000 ppm) or when signal strength is very low Transducer cables extend in the same direction as flow Doppler Installation www.bellflowsystems.co.uk

Potential Complications Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are in use at the majority of water and wastewater treatment plants and lifting stations. If installed without proper grounds and shields, VFDs may output frequencies that will interfere with proper operation of Doppler flow meters. VFD interference typically will cause erroneous readings – that are constant – to be shown on the meter’s display and outputs www.bellflowsystems.co.uk Doppler Installation
