Cultural Diversity Stereotyping new people you meet

Stereotype - Definition: a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group to give a fixed form to. WHAAT? Can you say that in English?

Stereotypes make it so we group people based on their outward appearance or how they are acting. We make assumptions about that group as a whole. And you know that people just love putting other people in groups. It makes them so much easier to understand

But WAIT!!!! What if not all of the people are really the same in the group? You can’t really tell a lot about a person from their outward appearance, can you?

CAN YOU?????

Of Course Not!! No more than you can tell what is in these boxes by their outer wrappings

Be Culturally Smart! By following these rules: When you meet someone new and different ask them about themselves. Don’t stereotype. If something seems strange that they are doing, ask them in a polite way to explain it to you. You probably do things they think are strange too. Be willing to explain to them as well. Help them learn about you and your uniqueness.

Diversity makes life Interesting! Treat everyone new you meet as a wonderful gift that you get to open up and see what they are really about.

You might just end up friends!
