2 ACE Overview Complete ACE application to apply for a first year House Officer position in NZ DHBs rank applicants in order of preference Applicants rank DHBs in order of preference ACE match using algorithm ACE notifies DHBs of successful matches ACE notifies applicants of successful matches DHBs send an offer of employment to successful applicants

3 Eligibility First Match Trainee Interns from a New Zealand medical school that is recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand and are either a New Zealand citizen or resident. Final year medical students from a medical school in Australia that is recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand and are either a New Zealand or an Australian citizen or resident. Applicants who have successfully passed the MCNZ NZRex exam and hold an unconditional work permit, residency or citizenship for New Zealand.

4 Eligibility Second Match Trainee Interns from New Zealand medical school that is recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand and are on a student visa. Final year medical students from medical schools in Australia that is recognised by the Medical Council of New Zealand and are not a New Zealand resident. Applicants who have successfully passed the MCNZ NZRex exam and does not hold a work permit or residency for New Zealand. Unsuccessful applicants from the first match

5 ACE Application ACE application form Certified copy of academic transcript Certified copy of residency document Three ACE referee report forms completed Curriculum vitae Cover letter(s) (Optional)

6 ACE application form Complete all sections! Changes can be made until the closing date – 28 June 2010

7 Academic Transcript Post certified hard copy of the official academic transcript Must be certified by: o Justice of the Peace o Court Registrar o Lawyer Original transcripts accepted but not returned Show enrolment to 6 th year programme UoA – Faculty Transcripts

8 Residency Document Post certified hard copy/copies of: o Photo page of NZ passport or o Photo page of an overseas passport accompanied by the relevant visa page or o New Zealand driver licence accompanied by birth certificated or citizenship certificate Must be certified by: o Justice of the Peace o Court Registrar o Lawyer Please do not send original documents

9 References Referee must be a consultant/SMO or a GP who has observed the applicant’s clinical work in a NZ health setting or in a comparable health setting (as defined by the Medical Council of New Zealand). References obtained from placements the applicant has completed in the past 2 years from the time the application is made. Must complete the ACE referee report form

10 Curriculum vitae ACE CV template can be found on the ACE Healthcareers website. It is not mandatory that you use this template but make sure you insert all the information included in the CV template. Examples of CVs..

11 Curriculum vitae It’s a tool to convince employers of your value – “Selling yourself” Professional, positive and genuine Clear and concise - try to keep to 1~2 pages (excluding research & publications) No gaps in employment history Avoid listing key skills/attributes Photograph optional No grammatical and spelling errors!

12 Cover Letters One page Professional and enthusiastic but not desperate Be yourself and avoid regular use of clichés Explain what skills you can bring to the job and the organisation – Do the research Show genuine interest by giving specific reasons to why you want to work for that DHB – Simply stating “I have ranked you as my first choice” is meaningless No grammatical and spelling errors!

13 ACE Selection Criteria Ranking criteria will depend on the DHB – i.e. DHBs may choose to weight the criteria differently Always been done but never publicised Increase transparency Pilot for: Canterbury District Health Board Hawkes Bay District Health Board South Canterbury District Health Board Provide all the information requested in the ACE CV template

Applicants ranked above the red line who have also ranked the hospital as their first preference will be matched to that hospital and be taken out of the matching pool. Applicants A and B have been matched to Hospitals 1 and 2 respectively. Hospital 3 still has one position and the next applicant on the ranking list is Applicant C. Applicant D was not matched and hospital 1 has an unfilled position..
