Part 1 WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED DAY ONE Ms. T. N. Jones1

Created for Computer Discovery by Deborah McDurmon Computer Components Ms. T. N. Jones2

In this lesson you will learn… Basic computer components Input, Processing, and Output devices Storage devices Memory by Deborah McDurmon Ms. T. N. Jones3

Draw the basic components… Ms. T. N. Jones4

Screen Monitor Keyboard Floppy disk drive (A:) Mouse CD-ROM (D:) Label your drawing… System Unit— contains the processor, motherboard, daughter boards, memory, hard disk (C:), fan, cables, etc. by Deborah McDurmon USB Port Ms. T. N. Jones5

The Mouse Scroll Wheel Primary Button Opens a program, executes a command Secondary Button Also called the “Shortcut Button” because it brings up a shortcut menu Ms. T. N. Jones6

Computer Styles Desktop Tower Both System Units contain the same basic components: motherboard, processor, hard drive, fan, video card, sound card, memory chips, cables Ms. T. N. Jones7

The Function of the Parts Monitor Is an output device that displays text and images generated by the computer The CPU (Central Processing Unit) The CPU is actually a chip housed inside the computer case. o It is also called the “brain”, it controls all actions carried out by the computer. o The type of processor determines computing power. Ms. T. N. Jones8

The Function of the Parts Keyboard Printer Is an output device that gives you a hard copy or printout of document created on a computer. Is an input device that provides a means of entering data into the computer. Ms. T. N. Jones9

Input Devices Tools used to put raw data into the computer to be processed Mouse Controller Microphone Trackball Power Glove Scanner Joystick Drawing Pad Digital Camera Keyboard Touch Screen Ms. T. N. Jones10

The most common INPUT device is the… Traditional Ergonomic Split Keyboard Creative PDA Keyboard Foldable Pocket Keyboard With Touchpad Ms. T. N. Jones11

Microprocessor = Processor = CPU (Central Processing Unit) On PCs, the processor is housed in a single silicon chip called a “microprocessor.” The “brain” controls all actions carried out by the computer. The type of processor determines computing power. Ms. T. N. Jones12

Three basic characteristics differentiate microprocessors: Instruction Set: The set of instructions that the microprocessor can execute. Bandwidth: The number of bits processed in a single instruction. Clock Speed: Given in megahertz (MHz), the clock speed determines how many instructions per second the processor can execute. Ms. T. N. Jones13

Output Devices Tools that show how the data has been processed Ms. T. N. Jones14

Storage Devices Hard Disk: the “C: drive”, the permanent storage “Closet” inside your computer Compact Disk (CD): usually labeled the “D: drive”, holds more data than a floppy disk and is more durable. Some CDs are re- writable. Ms. T. N. Jones15

Computer Memory ROM (Read Only Memory) Memory on which data has been prerecorded. Once data has been written onto a ROM chip, it cannot be removed and can only be read. ROM stores critical programs such as the program that boots the computer. Ms. T. N. Jones16

Computer Memory RAM (Random Access Memory) The computer’s “main memory” because it is necessary for manipulating data although it is temporary. Data stored here is lost when the computer is turned off. Every program you run and every file you access must be copied from a storage device into RAM. The amount of RAM on a computer is crucial because it determines how many programs can run at one time and how much data can be readily available to a program. You can usually increase the amount of memory by inserting extra memory in the form of chips. Ms. T. N. Jones17

Test Yourself 1.The computer screen is built into the __. 2.Name one input device. 3.Name one output device. 4.The “brain” of the computer is the ____. 5.Where is the computer’s start-up program stored? 6.The hard disk drive is also called the ___ drive. Ms. T. N. Jones18
