1 Welcome to PTA Open House 4 th Grade

2 PTA Please join PTA!! Remember that it is necessary to join PTA each school year. The cost is $7 per adult. By joining the PTA, you are supporting the NFP staff and students. The PTA uses your money for teacher classroom grants, to bring in a variety of cultural arts events, to support technology at the school, to provide instructional resources for all teachers, and to provide a variety of family fun events throughout the school year (including the Spring Falcon Fest) just to name a few. Thanks in advance for your support of the wonderful NFP PTA.

3 Communication At any time you need to communicate with us, you are welcome to call the school (919-570-2220) and leave a message. We will call you back as soon as we can (usually after school). You may also send us an email directly. And, of course, you are welcome to send a note. Wake County policy does not support texting. Register your email on the NFP website for updates, classroom newsletters and other school related information. See website for new and archived newsletters.

4 NFP School SOAR Plan Students are expected to show proper behavior inside and outside the classroom. Students earn “Falcon Tickets” for meeting these behavior expectations. The students will be allowed to redeem their “Falcon Tickets” for prizes throughout the year. Minor and Major referrals will look different this year. All referrals are done on the computer and parents receive a printout.

8 Assessments mClass assessments will be done at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and at the end of the year. CASE 21 assessments will be given at the end of quarter 2 only. EOGs will be at the end of the year.

9 1 st Quarter Reading Standards Transitioning to Take Charge as a Reader RL4.1 – Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly when drawing inferences from the text. RL4.2 – Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text. RI4.1 - Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Deepening Understanding of Characters Through Higher Order Thinking and Questioning RL4.3 – Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact). SL4.1 – Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. The standards below may be observed and assessed within any content area throughout the day. Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material, explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions and carry out assigned roles. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others. Review the key ideas expressed and draw conclusions in light of information and knowledge gained and discussed.

10 1 st Quarter Writing Standards W4.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. A. Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally. B. Use dialogue and description to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations. C. Use a variety of transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events. D. Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. E. Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events. W4.5 - With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. W4.9a - Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Apply grade 4 Reading standards to literature (e.g., “Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text [e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions].”) L4.1d - Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Order adjectives within sentences according to conventional patterns (e.g., a small red bag rather than a red small bag).

11 1 st Quarter Math Standards 4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in the ones place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. 4.NBT.2 Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meaning of the digits in each place using >, =, or < symbols to record the results of comparisons. 4.NBT.3 Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place. 4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. 4.NBT.5 Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. 4.OA.3 Solve multi-step word problems posed with whole group numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. 4.OA.4 Find all factor pairs for a whole number in the range 1-100. Recognize that a whole number is a multiple of each of its factors. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is a multiple of a given one-digit number. Determine whether a given whole number in the range 1-100 is prime or composite.

12 1 st Quarter Social Studies Standards 4.H.1 Analyze the chronology of key historical events in North Carolina history. 4.H.2 Understand how notable structures, symbols, and place names are significant to North Carolina.

14 Conferences We will hold 2 teacher initiated conferences per year – fall and spring Parents are welcome to request a conference at any time.

15 Absences/ Change in Transportation If your child is absent from school, please send me a note stating the reason for absence. I must code the absences daily in our attendance program. If you know of absences in advance, please notify me. If your child’s mode of transportation ever changes (example: riding home with someone else), I need to know. You can call the school, or send a note. If I am not notified of the changes by phone call, email or note, I will send your child home the way that they usually go. If you do not receive a reply please call the school to make sure your child knows how to go home.

16 Snack and Water Bottles Our scheduled lunch time is 12:00. Student’s will be allowed to bring in a snack to school for the morning. Please remind your child that sharing snacks are discouraged (due to allergies).

17 Monday Folders Each Monday, your child will bring home graded papers in their blue folder that was provided by the school. You may keep the graded papers. The folder will always contain forms/notices sent home by the school as well. Homework will be placed in the folder on Mondays too. Homework is not due to me until Friday. Please check your child’s blue folder regularly. I prefer a one folder system.

19 Student Dress Code Please refer to the student handbook.

20 Volunteering Please remember to register as a volunteer! You may use the computers in the back of the room. See the website to sign up for volunteer opportunities.

21 Field Trips Ocean Studies Trip (Dates are still tentative). –We are hoping to start collecting money soon. –Track 1 and 3 are planning our trip for October 7 th. Track 2 and 4 are planning on October 28 th. Approximately $75 Symphony
