Students interested in a MSISR can apply for both the 4 year National scholarship and the MSISR scholarship, BUT are only able to activate whichever is awarded first. Available for Navy option only (Nurse not eligible). Marine Corps has their own program and hold their own selection procedures.

18. Application Process Remaining Actions
NRC releases electronic portion of application to NSTC OD
NSTC OD consolidates hard-copy and electronic information, reviews, QCs and prepares for board
Boards are held (September through April)
Results will be posted to the Website after approval of board results (usually within two weeks).
Once an application has been submitted to NSTC – any changes must be sent directly to NSTC
Request must come from applicant
Once NSTC OD receives the application, it is checked into the system. The applicant can check the status page on the web site to view their application status.
Although the application is online, currently we still print forms for the board.
3. Board members review the record to evaluate the competitiveness of the applicant. Board membership is determined by Chief of Naval personnel and is made up of both NROTC PNS and XOs, NRD CO/XOs/Officers and other fleet officers.

19. Scholarship Selection
“Select scores” are set and then decreased throughout the year
Many students go into “hold” status for multiple boards
When website closes:
First “non-selects” announced
No additional/update info is accepted
Applicants are kept informed via:
Real-time updates via Check Status of Application on NROTC website
sent informing them of Selection that includes additional info
Mail correspondence sent their address on file
Selects must be:
Found physically qualified
Admitted to assigned school
It is the applicant’s responsibility to gain admission to school

20. Placement Each NROTC Unit has a scholarship capacity
Initial placement is done by OD based on:
Individual’s preferences
Capacity available.
First Choice school is not guaranteed!!!
≈ 85% placed at 1st choice school
≈ 75% stay at 1st choice school
If a Unit is at capacity, then
Submission of a wait list request from applicant
Limited to three wait lists
Recipients may change initial placement to another school if capacity exists at the NROTC Unit.
Placement change request are approved based on available capacity and the date of the request (first come, first served), not merit
1. Applicant needs to apply early to schools – must not wait until they have been awarded the scholarship.
2. Applicant needs to be realistic when listing school choices. Many list MIT as first choice, but have no chance of admission to MIT. Be practical – or at least have a practical back-up.

21. Medical
Once selected, DODMERB (DOD Medical Examination Review Board) is notified that applicant needs a physical
DODMERB notifies Concorde
Concorde contacts applicant and schedules physical
DODMERB may PQ or NPQ
If NPQ, BUMED may recommend waiver
If CNSTC approves waiver – good to go
If CNSTC disapproves waiver – end of the line
Once PQ, must notify Unit if medical condition changes
If not PQ by start of semester
Will have to pay tuition up front but may be reimbursed if eventually PQ.

There are two areas for NJROTC/CAP
One for being a member / One for leadership
Make sure both are marked – or at least mark the membership one.
If they have already graduated from high school, tell us what they are doing now. Work, school, both, etc. This is especially important for those that reapply in that first semester of college.
Prepare for Officer Interview. Sometimes an applicant doesn’t realize it is a graded interview. There are many instances where an applicant thought it was an information session, therefore they did not achieve their highest potential score. NJROTC cadets often do well in the interviews – they show up in uniform and say “yes sir”, etc.
Achieving only qualifying minimum SAT/ACT test scores may not be competitive. Students may take again, send results to us (if improved), and we will update the application. We accept scores from tests taken until the end of Dec of the year prior to planned college start. Scores cannot be more than two years old. We will mix and match test scores..
Applicant can provide any additional information that they would like the board to consider up until the application closes (31 Jan )

23. Additional Advice for Applicants
Be proactive in checking the status of the application
Utilize the “Check Status of Application” link on the NROTC homepage
Application has not been reviewed unless Status indicates “Pending Decision”
Take SAT/ACT as many times to obtain a competitive score
Superscore (consider only the highest score of each category of all tests taken)
Top choice school should not be a “reach” school
School accounts for contact information not recommended
Update any changes to contact information
Contact the NROTC Unit of a specific school for details regarding that individual Unit’s operations
