1 Learning Intentions and Success Criteria ELA/Reading/Social Studies 1st Nine Weeks 2nd Grade

2 Writing Learning Intention: I will learn to identify and write proper nouns. I will know I am successful when I: Capitalize the first letter in the names of people and pets (Mr. Orcutt). Capitalize the first letter in the names of specific places (Target). Capitalize the first letter in the days of the week (Monday). Capitalize the first letter in months of the year (January, February).

3 Writing Learning Intention: I will learn to capitalize the first word in a sentence. I will know I am successful when I: Capitalize the first letter of a word in every sentence.

4 Writing Learning Intention: I will learn to identify and use ending punctuation for different types of sentences. I will know I am successful when: I use a period at the end of a sentence that makes a statement (.) I use a question mark at the end of a sentence that asks a question (?) I use an exclamation point at the end of a sentence that shows I am excited (!)

5 Writing Learning Intention: I will learn how to identify and write complete sentences. I will know I am successful when I: Start each sentence with a capital letter. Capitalize each proper noun in the sentence. Capitalize “I” in the sentence. End each sentence with the proper punctuation (.?!)

6 Writing Learning Intention: I can write a declarative sentence. I will know I can write a declarative sentence when I: Start the sentence with a capital letter. Write a sentence that makes a statement about something (I ate pizza for dinner last night.). End the sentence with a period (.)

7 Spelling Learning Intention: I can spell words from a high frequency word list. I will know I am successful when I: Can spell all words on my sight word list correctly.

8 Spelling Learning Intention: Identify a closed syllable and a one to two syllable word. I will know I am successful when I: Identify a word where a vowel is followed by a consonant and the vowel is short (fan, gum). Identify a word where it’s said as one sound (cat, dog) Identify a word where it’s said as two sounds (apple, orange, walking)

9 Spelling Learning intention: Identify words with consonant clusters (fl, gr). I will know I am successful when I: Read words that have two consonants next to each other (flower, green, grow, flip)

10 Spelling Learning Intention: Read and identify words with CVCe (consonant vowel consonant silent e). I will know I am successful when I: Can identify and read that the vowel is long in a word with CVCe (phone, cape, tube, these, scene).

11 Phonics Learning Intention: Read and identify the difference between short and long vowel sounds. I will know I am successful when I: Understand that a long vowel says its name (game, cube, kite, vote) Understand that short vowels can have many different sounds. They don’t say their names (cup, cook, luck, apple, cell).

12 Phonics Learning Intention: Make connections between words that start the same. I will know I am successful when I: Identify words that begin with the same letters or same sounds (split, Sprite, dinner, diner, cat, cupcake).

13 Phonics Learning Intention: Decode multisyllable words. I will know I am successful when I: Read a word with more than two syllables (birthday, evergreen, traffic, computer).

14 Phonics Learning Intention: Identify two syllable words with consonant clusters I will know I am successful when I: Can read words that start with two or more consonants and are two syllables (staple, struggle, stingy)

15 Phonics Learning Intention: Identify patterns in words to help me figure out words I don’t know. I will know I am successful when I: Chunk words by smaller words or patterns to figure out a new word (cake, make, break, steak)

16 Phonics Learning Intention: Identify base words. I will know I am successful when I: Identify the word that can’t be broken down for meaning (happy, care, view).

17 Phonics Learning Intention: Write and use words in past tense by adding ed. I will know I am successful when I: Add -ed to a word to mean that it happened in the past (liked, waked, tricked).

18 Reading Learning Intention: Ask and answer questions to show what I read. I will know I am successful when I: Ask questions before, during, and after I read a story. Use words or pictures in the story to help me answer my questions.

19 Reading Learning Intentions: Make predictions about the story I’m reading. I will be successful when I: Know that a prediction means a guess about what will happen. Use the pictures, titles, and words in the story to make that prediction. What I already know about the topic or story to make the prediction.

20 Reading Learning Intention: Make connections to a story I read. I know I am successful when I: Read a part of a story that reminds me of something that happened in my life. Read a part of a story that reminds me of something that happened in another book. Read a part of the story that reminds me of something that happened to others or the world around me. Can explain how the connection helps me to understand what I read.

21 Reading Learning Intention: Visualize what I read in a story. I will know I am successful when I: Can use pictures in the story to help me create a mental image in my mind of what is happening. Can use the words in the story to help me create a mental image of what that character is doing or how they are feeling. Can explain to others what I read or saw that helped me to create my mental image.

22 Social Studies Learning Intention: Describe different types of communities. I will know I am successful when I: Identify and explain the characteristics of an urban community (city, tall buildings, lots of traffic). Identify and explain the characteristics of a suburb community (outside the city, houses, schools, grocery stores). Identify and explain the characteristics of a rural community (farms, lots of space). Explain what type of community I want to live in and why I want to live there.

23 Social Studies Learning Intention: Identify the traits of a good citizen. I will know I am successful when I: Identify and demonstrate respect in the classroom for others, the teacher, and myself. Identify and demonstrate responsibility in the classroom for doing my best work and having all my materials ready. Identify and demonstrate honesty in the classroom by working toward my goals and asking questions to further my learning.

24 Social Studies Learning Intentions: Describe a citizen’s responsibility to vote. I will know I am successful when I: Explain what voting is. Explain why voting is important. Ask questions to better understand what or who I am voting for. Keeping my vote private and not asking others who or what they vote for. Respecting others’ thoughts and opinions about what they are voting for.
