5 Overview of the Project The Homeless Youth Capacity Building Project (“the Project”) seeks to reduce homelessness among economically vulnerable transition age youth, ages 16-24 in California by: –organizing homeless youth providers to advocate for better local, state and federal policies, and –expanding the organizational capacity of nonprofit providers serving homeless youth

6 Overview of the Project (continued) The Project will select up to 60 nonprofits from seven counties to participate in the 2-year effort These counties include: –Alameda –Fresno –Los Angeles –Riverside –San Bernardino –San Francisco –Santa Clara Organizations not located in these counties are eligible to participate as Affiliates

7 What will the Project provide? Technical Assistance & Training –High-quality, individualized technical assistance to build organizational capacity –Topical trainings, educational web seminars, and an annual partner convening –Executive Director leadership and policy roundtable –Technical assistance publications and newsletters Financial Assistance –Eligibility to apply for up to $15,000 in competitive financial assistance to support capacity building Policy & Advocacy –Opportunities to advocate on a local, state and federal level to reduce youth homelessness in California

8 Possible Training & Technical Assistance Topics Building organizational capacity to access HUD funding through the local Continuum of Care process or other federal, state and local funding sources Becoming an effective service partner in a permanent affordable housing setting Developing and maintaining an individual donor base Strengthening a nonprofit board of directors

9 Financial Assistance Program Designed to support capacity building activities that further the long-term viability of organizations that serve homeless youth The first financial assistance grant application will be released in April 2010 Organizations must first be selected as Network members to be eligible to apply for financial assistance Additional information about the Financial Assistance Program will be provided after Network Members have been selected

10 Eligibility Criteria To be eligible to become a Network Member, an organization must: –Provide housing referral services, shelter, transitional housing, or permanent housing to homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24; and –Provide services in one or more of the following counties: Alameda, Fresno, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Francisco, or Santa Clara; and –Be a nonprofit organization

11 Selection Criteria Organizations will be selected to ensure a diversity of representation in the following areas: Geography Organization and budget size Target population Experience working with agencies that administer TANF The selection process will be open and competitive, without recipients being pre-selected or otherwise given a competitive advantage or discriminated against, including discrimination on the basis of the organizations’ religious character or affiliation.

12 Network Affiliates Organizations that are not eligible to participate as Network Members may participate as Affiliates Affiliates will receive the same benefits as Network Members, but will not be eligible for one-on-one technical assistance or be eligible to apply for financial assistance. Affiliates must complete an application; applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis

13 Applying to Join the Network Online application is available at www.cahomelessyouth.org www.cahomelessyouth.org Application allows you to indicate interest in Network Member or Network Affiliate Application must be completed by Friday, March 12 th at 5:00 p.m. Application should take no more than 30 minutes to complete; very limited narrative Questions about organization size, budget, mission, and services & how your participation will impact economic recovery
