2 Educational goals and outcomes in nursing Overview Every human being is a unique person with complex biologic, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual components in constant mutual interaction with their environment. The continuum between health and illness can be seen as the ability to adapt to a changing environment. Health is a process of becoming integrated and whole that reflects the positive interaction of the person and environment. Health is a dynamic state that continually changes as an individual and family interacts with their internal and external environments.

3 Educational goals and outcomes in nursing Overview Based on the above definitions of health and illness, the nurse's role is one of identifying adaptive and ineffective responses to illness, and helping to expand adaptive abilities by enhancing human and environmental transformation

4 Educational goals and outcomes in nursing Overview Nurse education consists in the theorical and practical training provided to nurses with the purpose to prepare them for their duties as nursing care professionals. This education is provided to nursing students by experienced nurses and other medical professionals who have qualified or experienced for educational tasks

5 Educational goals and outcomes in nursing Overview Among nurse educators, arguments continue about the ideal balance of practical preparation and the need to educate the future practitioner to manage healthcare and to have a broader view of the practice.

6 Educational goals and outcomes in nursing Overview To meet both requirements, nurse education aims to develop a lifelong learner who can adapt effectively to changes in both the theory and practice of nursing.

7 Educational goals and outcomes in nursing Overview Nursing education is the process by which students are socialized into the profession of nursing. the curriculum must provide students with skills and knowledge utilized in the common domain of nursing practice and when possible derived from evidence based research. The Nursing Faculty encourages life-long learning in nursing The goal of Nursing is to promote man's positive adaptation in situations of health and illness. In other words, the focus is to increase a person's adaptive responses and to decrease his ineffective responses in the physical and psycho/social adaptive modes, thereby, contributing to health, quality of life, and dying with dignity.

8 Program Goals-1 Bachelor's Degree(BchD) prepares nurses: for a professional role from and away the bedside with coursework in nursing science, research, leadership, and nursing informatics. also provides the student with general education in statistic, humanities and social sciences. opens up opportunities for greater career advancement and higher salary options.

9 Program Goals-2 qualifies its holder for administrative, research, consulting and teaching positions that would not be available to those with only secondary degree of nursing Integrate knowledge, theory, and evidence-based research into current nursing practice. Assume a leadership role as the registered professional nurse in healthcare systems and diverse community settings. Engage in activities for continued professional growth

10 Training of nurses responsible for general care-8 Directive 2005/36/EC 1. Admission to training for nurses responsible for general care shall be contingent upon completion of general education of 10 years, as attested by a diploma 2. shall be given on a full-time basis and shall include at least the programme described in Annex V, point 5.2.1. 3. The training of nurses responsible for general care shall comprise at least three years of study or 4 600 hours of theoretical and clinical training

11 Training of nurses responsible for general care-8 Directive 2005/36/EC 4. the duration of the theoretical training representing at least one- third of the training 5. the duration of the clinical training at least one half of the minimum duration of the training. 6. The training shall be given by teachers of nursing care and by other competent persons, in nursing schools and other training establishments selected by the training institution.

12 Annex V, point 5.2.1 The training to the award of a formal qualification care of nurses responsible for general care shal consist folowing two parts: A.Theoretical instruction a) Nursing b) Basic science c) Social science B. Clinical instruction

13 Training of nurses responsible for general care-1 Training for nurses responsible for general care shall acquired the following knowledge and skills: (a) adequate knowledge of the sciences on which general nursing is based, including sufficient understanding of the structure, physiological functions and behaviour of healthy and sick persons, and of the relationship between the state of health and the physical and social environment of the human being; (b) sufficient knowledge of the nature and ethics of the profession and of the general principles of health and nursing;

14 Training of nurses responsible for general care-2 (c) adequate clinical experience; such experience, which should be selected for its training value, should be gained under the supervision of qualified nursing staff and in places where the number of qualified staff and equipment are appropriate for the nursing care of the patient; (d) the ability to participate in the practical training of health personnel and experience of working with such personnel; (e) experience of working with members of other professions

15 Clinical Intership (EBP)-1 Use a systematic approach to identify, analyze and diagnose actual or potential problems within a variety of health care settings, and develop, evaluate, manage, and test possible solutions based upon the highest level of evidence available, allowing for innovative solutions. Demonstrate competence in knowledge application activities: the translation of research in to practice, the evaluation of practice improvement of the reliability of health care practice and outcomes, and participation in collaborative research.

16 Clinical Intership (EBP)-2 Communication (Interprofessional Collaboration): Demonstrate effective oral and written communication, including the use of informatics, with clients, colleagues, and diverse groups to foster effective interprofessional collaboration to promote optimal health outcomes in individuals/families/communities/populations and within healthcare organizations, and to disseminate professional practice findings.

17 Nursing Program Student Educational Outcomes- 1 At the completion of the BchD program, a graduate will be able to: Facilitate safe, holistic and effective patient/family centered care outcomes through use of evidence-based research and other science-based frameworks to promote and maintain health, prevent disease, and manage illness. Demonstrate professional accountability and responsibility for nursing judgments and actions within an ethical and legal framework, utilizing the most current knowledge. Demonstrate leadership in the provision and coordination of safe, cost effective and high quality nursing care. Advocate for patients, families, communities, and the nursing profession, applying values and utilizing an ethical framework, critical reasoning, and cultural competence.

18 Nursing Program Student Educational Outcomes-2 Integrate evidence-based practices that support decision-making in the delivery of nursing care. Utilize information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, educate, mitigate error and support decision making. Provide high level professional nursing care to clients across the lifespan in a variety of health care settings. Promote a culture of caring to provide holistic, compassionate, culturally competent care. Function effectively within nursing and interprofessional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care.

19 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BchD) Student Learning Outcomes-1 Ethics: Engage in ethical reasoning and actions to promote collaboration, social justice, and leadership as healthcare professionals. Professional Nursing: Demonstrate accountability for self and nursing practice including continuous engagement in life-long learning. Evidence Based Practice: Improve patient health outcomes by accessing, analyzing, and interpreting information (theoretical, research, other) at the individual/family and community level

20 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Student Learning Outcomes-2 Critical Thinking: Use a systematic approach to analyze real or potential problems for the purpose of developing, testing, and evaluating innovative solutions within a variety of healthcare settings. Communication: Use communication theories/techniques and demonstrate communication/collaboration with colleagues, transdisciplinary groups, including the use of informatics, to promote relationships with individuals/families and communities. Manager of Care: Plan and/or provide patient-centered, empathic, and coordinated care that contributes to safe and high quality outcomes.

21 Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Student Learning Outcomes Ethics: Evaluate ethical decision making from a personal and organizational perspective Professional Practice: Integrate a wide range of theories and knowledge from nursing and other disciplines Evidence Based Practice: Access, analyze, and interpret information (theoretical, research, other) at the individual/family and community level to provide high quality health care, initiate change, and improve nursing practice and health care outcomes. Critical Thinking: Use a systematic approach to identify, analyze and diagnose real or potential problems with a variety of health care settings Communication: Manage communication, including the uses of informatics, with clients, colleagues, and diverse groups.

22 Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student Learning Outcomes Ethics: Develop and /or evaluate effective strategies for managing the ethical dilemmas Professional Practice: Integrate a wide range of theories and knowledge from nursing and other disciplines Utilize appropriate theories and evidence from nursing and related fields to provide high quality, accountable healthcare Evidence Based Practice: Access, analyze, interpret and develop information at the individual/family, community/population, and organizational levels to provide high quality health care and health education, initiate change, and improve nursing practice and health care outcomes. Utilize principles of instructional design to develop, promote learning outcomes, and evaluate nursing and health education curricula

23 Conclusions The ultimate goal of nursing care is healthy people in healthy communities. For individual patients, success is measured by improvement in or maintenance of health; for the community, success is measured by improvement in overall community health and quality of life indicators. Focusing on these goals and evaluating patient and community outcomes, completes the nursing process and allows modification of the plan of care as needed.
