The Relationship of Life

Section 1: Energy Flow Life Depends on the sun All energy for plants comes from photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O + Sun  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Plants make a complex sugar known as carbohydrates When animals eat plants we get these carbohydrates

What is a producer? Producers are plants Plants are autotrophic, which means that they use the process of photosynthesis to make glucose

What is a consumer? The raccoon is a diverse consumer that will eat fish, crayfish, mice, snakes, birds, eggs, insects, and even honey. So we can define consumers as herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores We call consumers heterotrophs

Herbivores These are animals that only eat plants

Carnivores These are animals that feed on other animals. Meat lovers They can be big or small.

Omnivores These animals will eat both plants and animals. This is a coyote It will eat berries and anything from mice to deer.

What is a Decomposer? Some consumers get their food by breaking down dead organisms Ex.) Bacteria and Fungi Nutrients return to the soil

Cellular respiration: How do we use the energy? Process of breaking down food to yield energy is called cellular respiration Different from respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy You use this energy in daily activities Digestion, homeostasis, reading, sitting, etc. Excess energy is stored in the body

The Food Web The food web is a network of feeding relationships within an ecosystem or community. It is very complex. It is made up of a series of food chains (when energy is transferred from one org. to the next)

This is a food web of a pond Which creatures are the producers? Cat tails and watercress Which creatures are the consumers? All the rest!!!!

There are far more producers then consumers. Why?

Pyramid of Numbers The pyramid of numbers actually shows the population of each type of creature in the ecosystem. How many primary consumers are there? Can you label the consumers as primary, secondary, etc.?

Biomass Pyramid Biomass Pyramid measure the dry weight of organic matter within each group. Which group has the most biomass?

Energy Pyramid The energy pyramid how much energy is available at each trophic level. The 10% rule states that 10% of the energy is passed on to the next level. It can be higher or lower - but 10% is the average. Can you see how these differ? Which one is more realistic? Producers COSUMERSCOSUMERS

Where does all the energy come from? The Sun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
