2 What is a scapegoat?  Turn to your table partner and come up with a definition for the term “scapegoat”  Write it on your notecard  Be prepared to share your responses

3 Definition of a Scapegoat  a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place

4 Scapegoats throughout history  Turn to your table partner and compile a list of 3-4 events in history or pop culture that involve a scapegoat (person OR group).  Write them on your notecard  For each one, list the scapegoat, the situation, and why you believe that scapegoat was picked.

5 What do you notice?  What common qualities do you see among the people or groups who are scapegoats?

Director Alex Gibney explores the psychology of die- hard sports fans, the frightening phenomenon of scapegoating, and the hysteria that turned mild-mannered Bartman into the most hated man in Chicago.

7 “Catching Hell” Directions 11/21  Watch the 1 st section today and answer these questions with your table partner on the back of your notecard:  What do you think of the “Steve Bartman” incident? Why do you think the fans reacted the way they did? Do you think Steve Bartman acted appropriately?

8 “Catching Hell” Directions 11/25  Finish the 2 nd half of the documentary and write reactions to the following on the paper provided:  Describe the incident that happened to Steve Bartman.  How does Steve Bartman fit the definition of a scapegoat?  What makes Bartman an easy target?  What mistakes do you think were made in the handling of the Steve Bartman incident?  What lesson does the Steve Bartman incident show for not just sports fans, but all people?
