Responding to Hits & Conflict Resolution Read pages 169-173

Two students get their test back and receive an F. How does a Bottom 80 respond? How does a Top 20 respond?

Stability vs. Resiliency Stability is the ability to take a hit gracefully, to withstand the initial impact of the event. Resiliency is the ability to bounce back, to get over a hit quickly. (not holding a grudge) Utilizing these two skills keeps your best interest at the forefront. True Tales pg. 172

On a Piece of Paper Make two columns. Title one ‘Old’ and one ‘New’. Give examples of new conflicts, ones that have just started recently and old ones, conflicts that have lasted for quite some time (unresolved conflict).

Conflict – Ex’s People Your Age Face You SchoolParentsFriends Sig. Other Other Adults

Clearly your life would be more enjoyable if you could prevent conflicts or resolve them once they appear. You can. Today we’re going to examine a Top 20 way of resolving conflict. Objectives: 1.Understand the difference between heart-to-heart vs. toe-to-toe conflict 2.Be able to practice heart-to-heart conflict resolution 3.Avoid nine ineffective responses in conflict situations.

Read pages 175-182

Conflict = to be in disagreement or opposition Resolution = to bring conflict to an end or to convert or transform. Conflict Resolution = to change the conflict into something better. Conflict Resolution = GR (Good Results) + GR (Good Relationships)

Chart on pg 176 Toe to Toe I want to win and I want you to lose. Adversaries Feel more anger Below the Line and try to solve it while we are BTL Use a lot of ‘You’ statements Results = Resentment & withdrawals in the trust fund Heart to Heart I want us both to win Working together to solve Feel more respect, openness and cooperation Above the Line and wait to solve it until we are ATL Use more ‘I’ statements Results = Deposits made in trust fund, relationships are improved

Steps to Heart-to-Heart 1.Be Above The Line – if either of you are BTL…wait to solve the problem! 2.Want what’s best for BOTH of you – ask yourself what you want out of this situation, what’s important to you & what’s important to the other person. 3.Listen for UNDERSTANDING…how does the other person see the problem?? 4.Remember WHAT you say and HOW you say it will either help resolve the conflict or make it worse.

Look at the 9 ineffective responses on page 180.

Examine a Current Conflict Think of a current conflict you have with someone that you would like to try to resolve. (If you can’t, think of one in the past) Keep this conflict in mind as you complete handouts 24.1 – 24.4
