1 Cracow- City of Kings

2 Cracow is a very old, historical city. For many years it was the capital of Poland. It is situated on the Vistula River.

3 Cracow is a fantastic base for tourists who like climbing in the Tatra mountains. It is cultural, artistic and academic center.

4 Cracow is one of the oldest Polish cities. Kings lived in a Royal Castle Wawel located on the hill. The Old Town is surrounded by the Planty and remnants of defensive walls like Barbakan and Florian Gate. From Floriańska Street with the Florian Gate runs the Royal Route through the Old Town to Wawel Hill.

5 The most famous church in Cracow is Mariacki Church situated on the Old Market Square. At noon you can hear popular “Hejnał” Buggle Call from Tower of Mariacki Church to all four sides of the world. It is broadcast too in radio at twelve o’clock.

6 There are many works of art inside. The best known is the main Gothic altar made by Wit Stwosz. It presents scenes from the lives of Virgin Mary and Christ.

7 Wawel is a Royal Castle where the museum is located now. Visitors can see a lot of lovely renovated chambers, furniture, armours, weapons, paintings, arras, sculptures and other treasures. King Zygmunt August brought the most beautiful ornaments – arras to Wawel in the 16th century.

8 Under Wawel Hill there is a famous cave with legendary Wawel Dragon. Next to this cave there is sculpture of Wawel Dragon. It is connected with legend about shoemaker who defeated this dragon and saved people of Cracow.

9 In Medieval times The Old Market Square was center of religious, economic and administrative life of Cracow. In the middle of it there is Cloth Hall. It is a building full of stalls indoors.

10 Tourists can buy souvenirs there. The Cloth Hall was rebuilt in the Renaissance style after 1555 fire and then it was restored in the 19 th century. It is worth seeing beautiful, historical place of trade.

11 In the past Kazimierz was a small town near Cracow. It was founded in 1335 by Kazimierz the Great. A lot of Jews lived and worked there. It became important center of Jewish culture with synagogues.

12 Now it is necessary to visit it because of unusual artistic atmosphere.

13 Near Cracow there are many interesting places to visit. Wieliczka – salt mine, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Wadowice and Castle in Wiśnicz.
