4  Took over the Latin lands  Built Rome’s city walls and sewers  Introduced alphabet and number system  Helped shape system of government  Gladiator Games and Chariot races  Influenced sculpture and painting.

5  Rome overthrew the Etruscans and created a republic (elected officials govern the state) Rome created a government called a Senate.  Patricians –The Rich families that mostly controlled society.  Plebeians- The common people  Plebeians had representation called Tribunes Patricians Plebeians

6  The Senate  300 Members Advised elected officials Controlled foreign policy Controlled public finances  Popular assemblies  Citizens voted and elected officials  Consuls  Put the laws into practice in the name of the senate. Two consuls became the head of the government and commander of the army

9  Legions  A group of 100 men led by Centurions (commanders)  The Conquest of Italy  Take the peninsula of Italy and then a move to take Sicily  The conquest of Greece  Adoption of Greek Culture

10  First Punic War- 264 BC – Roman Victory, fought mostly at sea  Second Punic War- 218BC – Hannibal (Carthaginian General) led an army (and war elephants!) across the alps and attack Rome.  Third Punic War- Rome retaliated and destroyed Carthage.
