1 Word Formation Strategies

2 Do´s and Dont´s Remember that sometimes you may have to make two changes to the stem word. Example: definite - (in)definite(ly). Don't leave the answer sheet blank for any question. If you don't know the correct answer you should always make a guess. Focus on the word that comes before or after the gap…is it a noun? a verb? For instance, if the word that comes after the gap is a noun, chances are that you’ll need to form an adjective. If the word that comes before the gap is a verb, chances are you might need an adverb. To do so, you have to be able to recognise and identify parts of speech. Example: Can you tell the difference between ‘hard’ and ‘hardly’? Read newspapers, online newspapers, magazines. Any article, the section you prefer. Short articles twice a week, for instance, and then underline any word that contains a prefix or a suffix…From now onwards, be aware of the fact that we form words with affixation.

3 How to improve Make a note of new words try to record all its different forms (nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs).
