2. Painting A. Surface preparation to remove dust, oil, moisture and other loose material from the surface should be done before painting. Cracks and holes should be repaired or caulked. B. Moisture in or on the wood will cause paint to blister and peel.

3. Painting C. Expanding and contracting surfaces cause the paint to crack and scald. D. Dust on the surface or in the paint causes specks and rough places on the painted surface.

4. Painting E. The quality of a paint job is strongly affected by the quality of the surface preparation before painting.

5. Painting Techniques, Tools and Supplies A. Painting with a paintbrush is much slower than with a paint spray gun, but the paint brush costs much less. B. Painting with a paint spray gun requires that paint be thinned, and the gun must be cleaned after each use to prevent clogging.

6. Painting C. A spray gun or spray can nozzle should be held about 6” – 8” from the surface being painted. Holding too close causes runs or sags on the surface, and holding too far causes the finish to look and feel dusty or sandy.

7. Painting D. Paints, thinners, and cleaners are flammable, and care should be taken to prevent fires. They also have fumes that can be harmful if inhaled over long periods of time. Use ventilation and/or respirator.
