Key Documents

Approach in Lessons Lessons are based around an enquiry approach with students working towards a key objective which is linked to a potential exam question. Lesson tasks are designed to allow students to take an active part with the inclusion of discussions and debates and with exam questions integrated.

Pictures from memory exercise

Key Objective: How effectively did the USA use technology to fight the war in Vietnam? How the USA used its air power during this war The use of chemical weapons How the USA supported its troops on the ground.

Learning Outcomes You give simple explanations for the use of technology including one or two examples. (Grade G – E) You give more detailed explanations for the use of technology using a number of appropriate examples. (D – B) You compare the effectiveness of the use of technology and Guerrilla warfare tactics. (Grade A – A*)

Evaluation of tactics Sort the following statements into a table as follows: Guerrilla WarfareUse of technology Effective Ineffective

Guerrilla WarfareUse of technology Ineffective (-) Guerrilla warfare would never have allowed the Vietnamese to force the USA out of Vietnam. Effective (+) Agent Orange and carpet bombing cleared jungle areas which allowed for more conventional warfare Effective (+) The North Vietnamese people were able to account for and accept casualties and losses more easily than the US Army. Guerrilla warfare negated technological differences and advantages between the USA and the Vietcong. Guerrilla warfare had already helped the Vietnamese defeat the French to gain independence. Ineffective (-) Agent orange had long term effects but little impact on the outcome of the war. Carpet bombing just increased the resolve of the Vietnamese and other supporting countries such as Laos. The more the USA used technology the more frequently Guerrilla warfare became, Napalm was effective but was indiscriminate when used and this lead to US public opinion opposing its use after the impacts of it were publicised.

Check your progress. a)During the Vietnam War, guerrilla warfare was more effective a tactic than the use of technology. To what extent do you agree with this statement ? [10] -You have 15 minutes to answer the question. -Then you’ll swap your answers and use the following mark scheme to assess their work and give feedback.

Writing Frame Technology helped the USA in the Vietnam war because…. But there were problems with the use of technology because…. Guerrilla warfare was effective in helping the North Vietnamese because…. However guerrilla warfare was not always effective because…. Overall the factor that I think did more to help decide the outcome of the war was __________ because…. (Remember to compare the importance - a) was more important because there were more ways it was effective etc.)

Mark Scheme – Guerrilla warfare was more effective than technology Level Marks / 10 Requirements 1 1 – 2 (G - F) General answer lacking specific contextual knowledge. e.g. ‘guerrilla warfare was better because the Vietcong won.’ 2 3 – 4 (E - D) Identifies or describes one factor OR Identifies or describes at least one reason for each factor -E.g. -Guerrilla warfare meant not facing the enemy in the open -Agent Orange was used to by the USA to clear rainforest 3 5 - 6 (C) - (B) Explains effectiveness of either Guerrilla warfare or use of technology (Five marks for a basic explanation; six marks for a developed explanation, or two brief explanations) - Technology was effective because helicopters allowed the USA to move troops quickly to where they were needed allowing them to respond to Vietcong attacks quickly. 4 7 - 9 (B - A*) Explains effectiveness of both Guerrilla warfare or use of technology (7 marks for brief on both, 8 for one detailed and one brief, 9 for both in depth or with some evaluation) 5 10 (A*) Explains with evaluation which was more effective - Although Agent Orange could clear the rainforest, the Vietcong just retreated into the areas that remained to carry on their guerrilla tactics, therefore showing that guerrilla tactics were more effective.

Specific Skill - Political Cartoons One skill that is specific to this course is the analysis of political cartoons. These appear in both sections of Paper 1 and there will be at least 2 of these as sources on Paper 2. It is also a skill students struggle with. Often the question for these sources is ‘What is the message of this source?’ Have a look at this example.

‘What is the message of the source?’ How are these marked? Level 1 [1]Description of surface detail / general assertion Level 2 [2-3] Secondary message of cartoon. 2 marks for secondary message; 3 for secondary message with support from details of the source [4-5] Level 3 [4-5] Recognises main message(s) of cartoon and develops answer using details of source OR knowledge OR cross reference (other sources on the exam paper) Award 4 marks for main message without support. Level 4 [6] and or Focus on main message of poster supported by detail from source and put into context or supported by cross reference
