2 Plan for the day SSR & Reflections Sonnet Annotation – I.v.104-117 Write a Sonnet Imitation in the voice of a character of my choosing Watch Romeo and Juliet (1968) – Balcony Scene Discussion – Why is this scene considered the penultimate love scene? Where have you seen echoes of this scene in literature, art, etc.? HW: Read Romeo and Juliet II. iv-v

3 Learning Targets I can draw evidence from Shakespeare to support my analysis and reflection by using 6 Thinking Strategies of Effective Readers. I can apply knowledge of mathematics and literature to create a sonnet in the style of Shakespeare to advanced my understanding of the text and demonstrate empathy for the characters. I can demonstrate flexibility and adaptability by writing in the sonnet form.

4 SSR Reflections - Imitations Write a 2 minute journal entry imitating the style and/or content of your reading.

6 Sonnet Annotation – I.v.104-117 Thinking Strategies of Effective Readers: 1.Task: Annotate RMonitor Comprehension (MC) 2.Connect to Background Knowledge (BK) 3.Questioning (QT) 4.Visualize (V) 5.Infer (I) 6.Determine Importance (DI) Task: Annotate Romeo and Juliet exchange (I.v.) What do you notice? What strategies give you insight into the text?

7 Sonnet Imitation Task – Write a sonnet from the point of view of the character of your choosing from Romeo and Juliet (or an exchange between characters). Requirements: Number of lines? Meter? Rhyme Scheme? Where is the turn/shift? Must have an accurate theme/message from what you know thus far.

8 Activity Processing Share your sonnets with your shoulder partner. What did you learn? How has this activity deepened your understanding of characters, conflict, theme, etc? Shakespeare or his time?

9 Balcony Scene Impressions/observations of the 1968 film? Why is this scene considered the penultimate love scene? What do you notice about the positioning of the characters? Petrarchan or Shakespearean presentation of love? Where have you seen echoes of this scene in literature, art, etc.? What is the significance?

10 Write Scene Summaries of Homework Reading (II.i-iii) Note day/time, setting, characters, conflict, main action, tone, style, etc. Write a theme prediction stemming from your interpretation of these scenes. Homework: Read Romeo and Juliet II.iv-v. Annotate one passage using effective thinking strategies in your notebook.
