Today’s Objective(s): I will be able to explain the different types of Reproduction. Do Now: List 2 things you remember about Reproduction.

Types of Reproduction In its most basic sense, we can break reproduction into two categories Asexual Sexual

Asexual Reproduction All genetic information comes from only one parent. – 100% the same; Exact Copy – Also known as Cloning. Types: Fission- Plant Propagation Budding- Spores Runner

Fission Example: Amoeba

Spores Example: Mold

Runner

Plant Propagation/Leaf Cutting

Budding

Mitosis Cell division where both new cells receive a complete set of chromosomes identical to that of the parent cell – Multiple Phases Produces 2 Daughter Cells – Exact Copies!! Important for Growth & Repair of Cells – Skin Cells

Mitosis

Today’s Objective(s): I will be able to explain how hereditary information is passed from generation to generation. Do Now: How is mammalian (mammal/Human) reproduction different from that of an amoeba?

The Reproductive System Produces sex cells necessary for the production of offspring Sex Cells have ½ the chromosomes of the parent Male and Female have different reproductive parts.

Female Reproductive System Produces female sex cells (Eggs) Parts Ovaries Oviduct/Fallopian Tube Uterus Vagina Goes through Menstruation

The Male Reproductive System Produces male sex cells (sperm) Parts: Testes Sperm Ducts Prostrate Seminal Glands Penis

The Male Reproductive System Produces male sex cells (sperm) Parts: Testes Sperm Ducts Prostrate Seminal Glands Penis

Sexual Reproduction Requires two Parents – Male = Sperm – Female = Egg The Sperm and Egg combine in a process called fertilization. – Can occur inside or outside the body. A fertilized egg, or zygote, has 100% of the genetic information required. Following fertilization, the developmental process begins.

Where do sex cells come from? Meiosis – A process of cell division in which each daughter cell receives one half of the parent’s genetic information. In humans = 23 chromosomes – Sperm = Male – Egg = Female

Meiosis

Mitosis vs. Meiosis
