1 THE QUESTION! J26 Summarize the historical expansion of voting rights in America. Include the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as well as the 15 th, 19 th, 24 th, 26 th Amendment.

2 Voting rights of 1965 This act was signed into law on Aug. 6 1965 by Lyndon Johnson It outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War like literacy test to qualify for voting.

3 15 th Amendment Passed by congress Feb. 26, 1869 and ratified Feb. 3, 1870. The 15 th amendment granted African American men the right to vote.

4 19 th Amendment Passed by congress June 4, 1919 and ratified on Aug. 18, 1920. The 19 th amendment granted women the right to vote.

5 24 th Amendment Passed in congress on Aug 29, 1962 and ratified Jan. 23, 1964. The 24 th Amendment prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax.

6 26 th Amendment ratified on July 1, 1971. The 26 Amendment lowered the voting age to 18 years old. This Amendment also lowered the age of many other Adult rights such a marriage and signing contracts without parental consent.
