Reptiles

POINT > Identify characteristics of reptiles POINT > Describe four groups of reptiles POINT > Describe adaptations for life away from water POINT > Explain the importance of the amniotic egg POINT > Note the extinct reptiles (dinosaurs)

POINT > Identify characteristics of reptiles Reptiles are ectothermic vertebrates with thick, scaly skin Breathe with lungs Adapted for life away from water Lay eggs with a hard, waterproof shell

CHECK: What are three characteristics of reptiles?

POINT > Describe four groups of reptiles 4 Groups: Lizards Snakes

POINT > Describe four groups of reptiles Turtles Crocodiles and alligators

Alligator: Rounded snout Crocodile: Pointed snout

CHECK: What are the four groups of reptiles? How can you tell an alligator from a crocodile?

POINT > Describe three adaptations for life away from water Reptiles are the first vertebrates fully adapted for life away from water: 1. Reptiles have thick, scaly skin that holds in water 2. Reptiles have kidneys that concentrate waste into urine or uric acid. This conserves water. 3. Reptiles lay eggs with a hard, waterproof shell

CHECK: Why are reptiles important in evolution? What do kidneys do? How is the reptile egg different than the amphibian egg?

POINT > Explain the importance of the amniotic egg Reptiles produce eggs with a hard shell and amniotic membranes The environment inside the egg is like saltwater The egg includes food for the embryo called yolk Oxygen and gas is exchanged through the shell The amniotic egg allows reptiles to live far from water*

CHECK: What are the membranes inside the reptile egg called? What is yolk?

POINT > Note the extinct reptiles (dinosaurs) Dinosaurs were endothermic reptiles Birds are likely descended from dinosaurs Driven to extinction by....?

The real reason dinosaurs went extinct

POINT > Identify characteristics of reptiles Reptiles can be herbivores but most are carnivores
