6 What are organizations? Organizations are a collective intentionally designed to achieve specific goals.

7 Types of organizations Bureaucracy – “ A highly rational organization, especially one that is highly efficient”(Ritzer 2015p179). Informal organization- An organization as it in reality works, as opposed to the way it is supposed to function. Oligarchy- An organization controlled by a small group of people who illegally obtained

Gendered organization- An organization in which gender represents a big role in deciding an individual’s place and career progression. Network organization- “An organization defined by networks based on and linked by information.

9 Types of Societies Gemeinshcaft society: “ A society characterized by face to face relationships, such as a family, rural village, or small town”(Ritzer 2015p198). Gesellschaft society: in contrast, gesellschaft relations are impersonal, distant and their relationships are more goal oriented and individuals proceed in their own self-interest.

10 Types of societies cont’d Industrial society : A society whose main focus is wealth and its even distribution. Risk society: A society whose main focus is risk and how to avoid, reduce, and channel it.

13 Arjun Appadurai According to Appadurai there are five global landscapes that function separately and sometimes conflict ( ethnoscapes, technoscapes, financescapes, mediascapes, and ideoscapes).

Spaces of places: “ Places with well- described borders that can restrict flows of all kinds similar to walled cities

Technoscapes: Mechanical ways of ship ping freight, objects, and information, such as container and the internet. Financesapes: Channels that allocate the flux of capital and other important commodities, such as stocks, bonds, and valuable metals.

16 Types of flows and global society cont’d Mediascapes: Electronic ways to create and transmit information across borders, and the content of these media transmissions. Ideoscapes: Political images with the global flow of ideologies and social movements inside of them.
