Individual Art of the Day Presentation By: Darya Yacoubian

Central Claim Losing loved ones is a hardship all people have to go through, but it is important to remember the time spent with them and to treasure the memories of them.

Reflections by Lee Teter

Lee Teter Personal ProfessionalAcademic ●Childhood friend and cousin Rick Teter was killed at age 28 ●Lee’s mother in law died from cancer at age 51 ●Lee’s grandfather died shortly after his mother in law’s death ●Lee’s friend Michael Banks was killed in the Vietnam War ●Made money in his early years by painting on anything and everything (t- shirts, signs, lettered doors, pin-striped cars, billboards for advertisments, and made portraits) ●Designed major portions of the movie “The Last of the Mohicans” ●Has currently stopped painting and focuses only on drawing, and isolated himself form the world ●Self taught artist

Background ●The Vietnam Veterans War Memorial: - Located in Washington D.C. -Dedicated to honoring those who died in the Vietnam War - Has over 58,000 names engraved on it ●Vietnam War -Lasted from 1955-1975 -Over 58,000 Americans killed

Placement ●Wall - Takes up most of the image, suggests that thoughts about loved ones are often the only things on our mind when we lose them, and can be overwhelming ●Suitcase and coat - Can assume the man in the image is going or is heading back from work. Suggests how remembering loved ones is important at all times

Proportion ●Wall - Takes up most of the picture, suggesting the importance of remembering loved ones and how big the importance is ●Reflections -Reflections of soldiers are second biggest in the painting, suggesting how much lost loved ones take up of our thoughts

Character ●Soldier 1 - Looking towards the man, making no gestures ●Soldier 2 - African American soldier reaching towards the man ●Soldier 3 -Pressing his palm against the palm of the man ●Soldier 4 -Has his hand on Soldier 3’s shoulder, looking at the man ●Soldier 5 - A woman, most probably a nurse, farther away from the man, looking at him, making no gestures 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Character (continued) ●Soldier 6 - Crouching under Soldier 2, gazing upwards at the man ●Man - Has his palm pressed against Soldier 3’s palm, one hand in pocket, looking down with an expression of sadness ●All of this suggests the relationships the man had with these soldiers and the relationships the soldiers had with themselves. The way they are reflections suggests how they are in the man’s memories. The man’s sad expression suggests he is mourning for his comrades while remembering them.

Light ●The lighting is not gloomy, but bright enough to show it is during the daytime. This suggests that mourning for others and remembering them may be painful, but it is not bad and it is good to treasure memories of them.

Mood and Tone ●Mood - The mood is very sentimental and powerful in the painting. ●Tone - The artist’s tone in the painting is very emotional and strong towards the central claim.

Ethos, Logos, Pathos ●Appeals to people with pathos, or emotional appeal. ●The audience is anyone who has experienced loss of a loved one and suffered through it, because the painting shows how mourning for someone is sad, but remembering their life is important.
