1 Summer 1.2 Natural Forms Painting Project Over the next 6 weeks you will complete a water colour painting of an animal seen in the documentary BBC Life. As you paint you will have the opportunity to watch some of the documentary. You will be working on A3 paper and should try to ensure that your painting is completed in the 6 lessons. You can come to Art Café on Thursdays to work on your painting too. You will be assessed on this piece of work as well as your homework tasks for the term.

5 Lesson 1 – Drawing your animals L5. You must have filled the page with a line drawing of your animal By the end of this lesson; L5/6. You could use a grid to help you draw the animal in proportion. L.6 / 7 You should have started to add details such as cracks and textures Tip. Draw the grid lightly on your work in pencil and copy each of the boxes separately.

7 Homework Week 1: Find a large leaf. Draw around the leaf on your A3 sheet of paper at least 10 times. Allow the leaf shapes to overlap. Outline the leaf shapes in biro neatly and erase any pencil marks.

8 Starter – Draw and then paint the various shapes with a watercolour wash A watercolour wash is a thin, light coloured, transparent layer of paint. Lesson 2 - Painting your animals – WATERCOLOUR WASH

9 You must try to fill all areas (unless) the area should be white. By the end of this lesson; You could use light and dark colours to show tones You should mix up your own colours. Try to use more than 10 different tones or colours

10 Week 2: Choose 2 of the leaf shapes Colour each of the different sections with different shades of green using colour pencils You could lightly shade the shape using blue and overlay a light shading of yellow to make green

11 Lesson 3 - Painting your animals – 2 nd Layer You must paint a second layer over some of the darker tones By the end of this lesson; You could change the size of your brush to suit the shape you are painting You should look carefully at the colours in your image and try to mix them accurately. Use a variety of colours that I have mixed myself to paint the image. Use washes, bold colours, graduated washes, and different size brushes to paint the image. Use a wide variety of marks to create realistic textures. Use light and dark colours that I have mixed myself to show tones / shadows and make the painting look 3D in some areas. Use a fine brush for small details such as cracks, hairs etc.

12 Homework Week 3: Choose 2 of the leaf shapes Use different types of paper to fill in each of the different sections of the leaf. Some of the papers could be used to create a bumpy texture. Glue them down carefully. BRING YOUR HOMEWORK TO SCHOOL NEXT WEEK TO BE CHECKED.

13 Lesson 4 - Painting your animals – 2 nd Layer You must decide where the shadows are in your painting and add a layer of colour to define them. By the end of this lesson; You could use a finer brush to begin to add details. 14 Homework Week 4. Use paint to fill in the different sections of 2 more leaves Use different shades of yellow, green or orange Paint is available every lunch time and on Mondays after school

15 Lesson 5 - Painting your animals – Mark Making You must look at the surface of the animal and discover its TEXTURE. 16 Homework Week 5 Using a media of your choice fill another 2 leaf shapes with patterns. You could use stripes, zigzags, spots, checks etc

By the end of this lesson; You should think about the types of textures you can use. How can you fill n this space in an interesting way quickly?

18 Homework Week 6 Fill in any of the available spaces with graduated tones Use harmonious colours. (Harmonious colours are colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. Eg. Blue, green and yellow, or yellow, orange and red)

27 Tips Check you have used blending and mark making? Mix colours for 30 seconds and add layers. Fill in all white gaps – no paper showing!
