1 Science In Year 11

2 Aims of this Evening: What has changed: Due to Government policy, all examinations are now terminal (all at the end of the course):  Examination papers in May/June 2016.

3 Double Award  Students will gain two Science GCSE’s, Core Science and Additional Science.  GSCE Core Science A – 3 exams in May/June 2016  GCSE Additional Science – 3 exams in May/June 2016  Controlled Assessments in the form of ISAs completed in class before April 2016 (Investigative Skills Assessments).

4 Triple Award  Students selected Triple Award Science as one of their options (2 groups).  Students will sit a further three papers in June 2016.  Students will also submit one further ISA  Triple is not a requirement for A-Level; min. BB  Students will gain three GCSE’s at the end of Year 11, Biology, Chemistry and Physics GCSE.

5 Tiers of Entry  Students will be able to sit either Higher or Foundation for individual papers maximising pupil success in Science.  This decision is based on assessments and student effort in lessons.  Key date for tiers of entry is the first week of January 2016.

6 Course Work in Science  Carries a weighting of 25% of each GCSE.  Takes at least 6 weeks to complete, so 100% attendance is crucial.  Made up of two written papers and a practical.  All three must be completed in order to submit an ISA.  Can help to improve students grade by 1 whole level.

7 Key Points to Remember  All ISA’s will take place from now until April.  All students need one ISA for each GCSE in Science.  This means two ISA’s for double award students, and three ISA’s for Triple award students.

8 Supporting your Childs Learning in Science.  Buy the recommended revision books from Science.  Check that all homework is completed on time and in a calm environment.  SAM Learning and Kerboodle.  Don’t miss lessons.  Participation in revision and intervention sessions.  Ask what they are learning about in Science.
