1 Biosand Filter Start-up and Scale-up Household Water Treatment Planning Session, April 19, 2009 Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Kabul, Afghanistan

2 Start Up Team: 2009 A “typical” start-up plan with 1 mold and team  Goal is to start-up, in this example, with just one mold. What is the team required for just one mold? Construction and Installation:  3 men (1 skilled working supervisor, 1 skilled mason, 1 unskilled) to: –Construct filters - test, patch, cure, paint, number for delivery –Prepare sand - sieve, wash, measure and bag sand and gravel for delivery –Construct lids and diffuser plates (this may be contracted out) –Deliver - load, transport, place filters in house, install filters –Monitor quality of construction and keep daily records Promotion, Training and Follow-up:  1 couple (2 people, half-time = 1 full time equivalent) to: –Promote, train, collect householder contribution –Instruct householder at time of installation on use & maintenance, –Carry out two follow-up visits in each home with filter installed –Monitor quality of construction and keep daily records Total Start-Up Team: 4 people for 1 mold = 5 filters/week (0.8 people/filter)

4 Scale-Up Team: 2010 - 2013 10 Mold ‘Full Scale’ Project Team: Construction Team:  5 men –1 skilled mason (working supervisor) –5 skilled & unskilled masons & helpers Installation Team:  5 men –1 driver/ working supervisor, –4 unskilled labourers Community Team:  5 people: 3 men, 2 women –1 Supervisor; the primary community contact –4 trained people (2 couples) Project Organization:  2 people –1 Team Leader –1 Record Keeper Total Project Team: 18 workers for 10 molds = 50 filters/week (0.4 workers/filter)
