Vocabulary The double decker boat Currents > A speed at which a flow of water moves Clermont > The name of Robert Fulton’s Steam boat Dubbed > Renamed Double-Decker Boat > A boat with two decks, normally with the top smaller

Robert Fulton, and Samuel F. B. Morse R obert had invented the first steamboat T his steamboat could transport people and goods T he steamboat could also move against currents and strong winds S amuel created the first telegraph I t used pulses of electricity along electric wires to send messages T he pulses became known as Morse Code after Samuel F. B. Morse

THE FIRST STEAMBOAT! The first steamboat was created by Robert Fulton, in 1811. It traveled down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. The engine didn’t have enough power to go back up the rivers, against the currents. Henry Miller Shreve designed a more powerful engine for the steamboats. He installed it into a double decker boat with a paddle wheel in the back. In 1816 he finally set out sailing the with the new engine. This launched a brand new era of technology and trade.

Paddle Boats or Steamboats? Paddle Boats Henry Miller Shreve, added a more powerful engine onto a double-decker boat with a paddle wheel in the back creating the first paddle boat. Steamboats Robert Fulton created the steamboat. The boat had a steam engine and two side paddle wheels. These paddle wheels helped pull the boat through water.

The Telegraph The telegraph was first built and invented by Samuel F. B. Morse. It used pulses of electricity along long wires to send messages. These pulses were then converted into words and messages were made. In 1844, the first long-distance message was made from Baltimore to Washington D.C.

In between 1807 and 1861 there had been many inventions. We included those in the reading but trust us there is way more. The steamboat to the paddle boat to the telegraph. Robert Fulton, Henry Miller Shreve, and Samuel F. B. Morse were important designers of these inventions. These invention didn’t just make life easier, they made it possible for better ideas in our future. Summary!
