2 Factors for Urbanization  When? – 19 th and early 20 th century  People needing jobs + Demand for industrial workers = Urbanization  Growth of cities  Immigrants settled in cities for cheap housing and available jobs  Came from Europe & Asia  Improvements in farm technology = fewer farming jobs  Many rural people left for cities to find work Ellis Island, New York Harbor

3 Urban Organization  Cities divided by race, ethnicity, and class  Immigrants lived by people of same ethnic background  More comfortable; not as intimidating

4 Urban Problems – Tensions Rise!  City Problems  Overcrowding  Crime  Disease  Poverty  Water-Sanitation  Pollution  Nativism- The idea of blaming immigrants for problems.  Laws are passed to limit immigration

5 Mr. Smith’s Crazy Airplane Factory  Rules for Employees:  Do not throw any airplanes. You will be fired immediately for testing the factory’s products  As factory owner, I determine the beginning and end of work days  You will be paid only if you make your predetermined total of airplanes.  You must follow all of the factory owner’s directions.  These rules may be altered by the factory owner at any time.
