2 What is a Preposition?  Prepositions are words that indicate location. The puppy is on the floor. The puppy is in the garbage can. The puppy is beside the phone.

3 Prepositional Phrases  A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition, its object, and any modifiers that accompany the object. Preposition + Optional Modifiers + Noun, Pronoun, or Gerund  Examples: At school  Preposition: at, Noun: school Under the stove  Preposition: under, Modifier: the, Noun: stove

4 Prepositional Phrases vs. Subordinate Clauses  Some prepositions also function as subordinate conjunctions. These prepositions are after, as, before, since, and until. A subordinating conjunction will have both a subject and a verb following it, forming a subordinate clause. After Sam and Esmerelda kissed goodnight = Subordinate Clause After the killer English test = Prepositional Phrase

5 Placement of Prepositional Phrases  Take a look at these examples: 1. Brockton Kennels sells retriever puppies to loving families with vaccinations. 2. Brockton Kennels sells retriever puppies with vaccinations to loving families.  Who has the vaccinations? The puppies or the families?

6 Prepositional Phrase Practice Underline the prepositional phrases in the following sentences. Circle the object of the preposition. Hint: Find a list of prepositions on p. 23 in the orange book! 1. I can’t complete the report without the information. 2. Come into the garden with me. 3. The stories in that book were translated by my professor. 4. She was looking for a man with money. 5. With a gleam in his eye, Meatbag snatched the pork chop.
