2. The Basics What is the Analysis of Student Work (ASW)? ASW is the Standard 6 student growth measurement process in North Carolina for select teachers in Advanced Placement, Arts Education, Healthful Living, International Baccalaureate, and World Languages. It is completely based upon student growth.

The Basics The following teachers will be involved: Arts Education Healthful Living International Baccalaureate World Languages Advanced Placement Student participation forms will be required for any photo or video assignments. (change) - This can be the general photo release form the school uses. We need to make sure we blot out names of students, teachers, and schools on submitted assignments – reviewers want complete anonymity.

4. Exemptions??? Is there a protocol for teachers who will be on extended leave, such as medical leave, during the school year? Teachers are exempt from the ASW process if they are on approved extended leave for: 20 or more consecutive days in a year-long calendar 10 or more consecutive days in a semester block schedule

Participation in ASW Process for K-8 Teachers (45 minute rule) 1.Educators who have 45 minutes per week scheduled with students in these content areas are required to participate in ASW. 2.Educators who do not have 45 minutes per week scheduled with students in these content areas are not required to participate in ASW. For educators who do not meet the requirements to participate in the ASW Process, the district may choose to opt in to the ASW Process for those educators. The decision to opt in for a group of educators must be a district-wide decision.

7. High School Participation 1.If 60% of an educator’s classes* are in ASW subject areas, then the educator must participate in both ASW and any other Standard 6 measure covering the remaining classes. 2.If 60% of an educator’s classes* do not fall in ASW subject areas, then the teacher is not required to participate in ASW. *Please note that locally developed electives that do not follow the standards set forth in the NC Standard Course of Study are not included in the ASW Process.

8. Class schedule composition: Yes, use ASW... All 6 classes in ASW areas and a planning period (6/7=86%) English II, Spanish I - IV, and a quarterly locally- developed cultural enrichment class (4/6=67% plus English II EOC) No, use other Standard 6 measure... 4 English II courses, 1 Theatre Arts course, and AP English Literature (2/6=33% → use English II EOCs) 5 Math I courses, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB (2/7=29% → use Math I EOCs) High School Participation

9. Objectives: Using the Strands, Modes, and Standards guidance charts, the teacher will choose 5 objectives. Clarifying Objectives **Remember, each content area has their own nuances for choosing objectives – pay close attention to the “strands and objectives chart.”

10. How will ASW Function? Teachers will choose a clarifying objective from the Standard Course of Study. The teacher will then give an assignment with little or no classroom instruction. Then the teacher will give the same assignment or even a more advanced version of the assignment at a later date in order to demonstrate growth on that clarifying objective. These assignments are known as Timelapse Artifacts. Teachers will do this 5 times throughout the school year with 5 different classes (if they have five different classes). DPI (The Online Platform) will choose classes and students.

11. World Language Reminders Timelapse Artifacts should in the target language. The only exception would be the Classical Languages. How do I show student work for Essential Standard #1 Interpersonal Communication? Interpersonal Communication objectives need to show students engaged in a conversation or some type of exchange or interaction. The collection method is usually audio or video, but a written form could work so long as it showed the interpersonal exchange. If a Clarifying Objective contains a list of topics, do the student work samples need to include them all? Answer: No

12. World Language Clarifying Objectives Must choose one STRAND from each of these three major categories: CLL (connections to Language and Literacy), COD (Connections to other disciplines) and CMT (communities). Must choose at least one objective from each of these four major categories: 1.Interpersonal Communication 2.Interpretive Communication 3.Presentational Communication 4.Culture

15. The Importance of Course Codes & Class Numbers If the course code is not correct in Power School or within ASW, please contact your data manager / content lead. If the code is wrong, your ASW will also be incorrect and it will affect your Standard 6. A minimum of 6 students must be on the roster for a class in order for that class to be selected by the ASW Online Platform.

21. Harvesting Format Teachers will need to hold onto Timelapse Artifacts until he/she uploads in December and or May (may need storage space). May need access to technology to record their Timelapse Artifacts (1 minute or less on video).

22. The Narrative When uploading Timelapse Artifacts, teachers will have a chance to explain the assignment, how it aligns with the clarifying objective and how the assignment demonstrates growth.

31. Reshuffling If a student is chosen that has transferred or was absent when the assignment was given or some other problem, the teacher can choose to Reshuffle. Principals will be notified when a teacher has chosen to reshuffle. According to DPI, the main job of the school administrator is to ensure teacher participation in the ASW process. To meet with teacher and sign off on the 5 clarifying objectives he/she has chosen.
