3 “Central theme” – (problématique) you must be able to defend Decide on your content structure (for, against, summary? 3 part plan?) You must illustrate your main points / arguments with examples. (Trends) Technical lingo? Simplify it. 3 Structure

4 Firstly, introduce yourself – people need to know who is talking to them Ask for their attention if you don’t have it– you are trying to convince people of something. Be polite! Then state your position from the beginning. What do you believe? 4 Structure 2

5 You need to grab your audience. Do this by: Making your best argument first. This will get people’s attention. Save your second best argument for last – people will remember this. Give the rest of your arguments in order; second best to least best. 5 Structure 3

6 Captivate from the word go: An interesting fact? Or figure? Ex: 1 in 2 pharmaceutical companies spend more on marketing than on research. Rhetorical questions Definition: A rhetorical question is asked merely for effect with no answer expected or when the presenter asks, AND ANSWERS, his own question. Ex: “When a situation like XYZ occurs, what can we do? What we have discovered is ABC.” (Shared experience – primacy) (Rhetorical ?) (Answer – recency) 6 Comm and persuasive techniques

7 Don’t be afraid to use rhetorical questions at other moments to maintain interest Do not confuse DIRECT questions with RHETORICAL ones Repetition of sounds (alliteration) ex « Research, redevelop and rebuild..» Rule of three 7 Comm and persuasive techniques 2

9 Avoid over using the conditional: I would like to talk to you today about  Today, I’m going to discuss But remain polite: “I’d like to draw your attention to this Chart ” vs “Look at this chart”  Linking words and phrases: extremely important 9 Confidence via words

10 Capture the attention of the audience Make it memorable (but not ridiculous!) Practise sentences which introduce and open your presentation Practise phrase which ends your presentation and opens Q&A exchange Practise very last words / thank you’s 10 Entrance and Exit - Verbal
