Student Learning Time (SLT)

 Effective learning time or student effort of learning in order to achieve the specified learning outcomes.  Inclusive all learning time activities (formal and in-formal).  Total time required by student to learn a particular component of curriculum = Official Contact Time + Guided Learning Time + Self Study Time (independent learning) + Assessment Time. What is Student Learning Time?

Student Learning Time (SLT) Official Contact Time (Lecture) Guided Learning (Tutorial, Lab., etc.) Self Study

1 Credit hour = (40  5) SLT per semester Student Learning Time (SLT) for 1 semester (14 weeks) Subject 1 Exam WeekSubject 2Subject x

 Effective Student Learning Time can be seen from different perspective:  About 8 hours per day; or 40 working hours per week; or 670 hours of study for 14 weeks  Nominal of 15 – 16 credits per semester  Maximum 18 – 22 credits per semester  1 credit = 40 SLT per semester  Appropriate allocation of SLT reflects in quality of student ’ s achievement. More on SLT

The notional credit hours define one credit. One credit hour is equivalent to 40 hours of student work load. Traditionally, a student is expected to spend about 2 hours additional for every 1 hour of lecture. Thus a total of 42 hours student learning time for a credit in a semester. NOTIONAL CREDIT HOUR (MQF SYSTEM)

Management tool to estimate the guided and independent study. Not to over burden the students in course works. To promote ethic and discipline in student towards learning. An indicator of effort in learning & study smart. Enhancing the skills of “ life-long-learning ” WHY SLT?

For every hour of lecture, add 1-2 hours of study time. Complex subjects may require 3 or more hours of independent learning. For every tutorial, add 1-2 hours of preparation time. For 3 hours laboratory works, add 2-3 hours for preparation and report writing. For Final Year Project, students require 240-400 hours of student work and 1-2 hours contact time per week with supervisor. GUIDELINES FOR CALCULATING SLT

For Industrial Training, student workload should be calculated based on the number of effective learning hours per day multiplied by the number of days per week and number of weeks allocated for the training. For every session of Problem-based Learning, add 2-3 hours of self directed study followed by 2 hours of group discussion. For a 1 hour presentation session, add 3-4 hours of preparation time. GUIDELINES FOR CALCULATING SLT

For written assignment (2000 words), add 10-20 hours of preparation time. For small group discussion lasting 1-2 hours add 1 hour of preparation time. GUIDELINES FOR CALCULATING SLT
