5 The following “you Musts” are essential for your success: YOU MUST HAVE COURAGE: As Leader, you are responsible for everything that happens. If you think an action is right, stand up and say so, and explain why. While opinion may not always satisfy your cadets, you will establish a reputation as a cadet whom they know looks out for their welfare. Be smart when you take this stand. 6 The following “you Musts” are essential for your success: YOU MUST BE FAIR: If you are fair in everything you do, everything else will fall into place. Being fair is treating every cadet even-handedly and with individual dignity and respect. Leaders who set double standards, will immediately begin to undermine your cadet’s trust and their willingness to follow your example. There is no substitute for fairness. We do not have two systems of fairness, here, at the Lyman Ward Military Academy. YOU MUST BE FAIR: If you are fair in everything you do, everything else will fall into place. 8 YOU MUST CARE: The “Gut-most” important point is that you must care for your cadets assigned under you, ALL OF THEM. You must be sincere and willing to go the extra steps for the young men under your charge. Only grudgingly will cadets follow a leader who’s just going through the motions of command. 10 ESTABLISHING YOUR STANDARDS : Your Standards are the foundation. Be tough and fair, but be reasonable. Involve your fellow cadets when dealing with standards, because you want your standards to be their standards. If they understand your standards, enforcing them will be easy. Whatever you do, don’t ignore the standards you have set, because when you do, you have then set new and lower ones. If you don’t enforce standards, you’re in for a difficult year.
