Microscopes Biology 1

A microscope is an instrument for viewing objects that are too small to be seen by the naked or unaided eye. It is used in a wide range of scientific fields, major discoveries in : biology medicine materials research

Types of microscopes Compound Light Microscope – uses a series of lenses to magnify objects. Electron Microscope – uses beam of electrons instead of light to magnify structures. 2 types – SEM Scanning electron microscope  - TEM Transmission electron microscope 

Magnifications Eyepiece is 10x Low power - 4x = ________x Medium power - 10x = _______x High power - 40x = _______x

Putting Microscope away Adjust course adjustment knob to its lowest position Remove slide Move objectives to “scan” or “low” power Power off and unplug Wrap cord and cover Move it back away from the edge of the lab table

Rules Never move course adjustment knob Always tell teacher if you Break a slide Microscope doesn’t work Or you cant get specimen focused Only carry microscope from its arm Always focus on low power
