3 The current position:  approximately 30 joint and dual programmes, with Institutions worldwide  a mixture of UG, PGT & PGR joint and dual programmes  some are for cotutelle activities, others are for entire cohorts  the College is rapidly expanding its collaborative provision programme

4 Challenges for King’s include: Establishing ownership of the process  responsibility for academic standards  approval of MoUs and MofAs  managing assessment  monitoring & review  student records  reporting  awards  communication with partner institutions

5 Certificates & Transcripts In December 2014 I posted the following question on the forum: ‘I’d be interested to hear from any institution that offers joint and/or dual awards with a partner institution, either here in the UK or overseas. What I’m particularly interested in is how you manage certificates and transcripts.’

6 Chapter B10 - Indicator 19 When degree-awarding bodies make arrangements for the delivery of learning opportunities with others, they ensure that they retain authority for awarding certificates and issuing detailed records of study in relation to student achievement… …Subject to any overriding statutory or other legal provision in any relevant jurisdiction, the certificate and/or the record of achievement records the name and location of any other higher education provider involved in the delivery of the programme of study.

7 Glossary of Terms Dual/double or multiple awards: Arrangements where two or more awarding bodies together provide a single jointly delivered programme (or programmes) leading to separate awards (and separate certification) being granted by both, or all, of them. Joint award: An arrangement under which two or more awarding bodies together provide a programme leading to a single award made jointly by both, or all, participants. A single certificate or document (signed by the competent authorities) attests to the successful completion of this jointly delivered programme, replacing the separate institutional or national qualifications.

8 QAA’s view In October 2013 we asked the QAA if Chapter B10 - Indicator 19 could be interpreted to allow for a two-part certificate, which would not be valid without its counterpart. The QAA confirmed that ‘I have referred to QAA’s Standards, Quality and Enhancement Team and can advise that in their view, a certificate made up of two named parts which each indicates that the bearer is only qualified if he/she can produce the two named parts together is in effect a single certificate for the purposes of the qualification. It would only present a problem if each part were silent about the fact that it needs to be complemented by the other.’

9 King’s, the current situation:  a single certificate, with the wording ‘jointly awarded with ….’, a single crest (KCL), and both sets of signatures  a single certificate, both/all crests, and both/all sets of signatures. ‘Jointly awarded with.’ (wording agreed on a case by case basis)  a two-part certificate, with the wording ‘jointly awarded with…’ and ‘not valid without….’. Single crest (KCL) and single set of signatures (KCL)  a single certificate, with the wording ‘issued in conjunction with the certificate awarded by …’ (wording still to be finalised), a single crest (KCL) and a single set of signatures (KCL)

11 Issues:  date of award  date of issue  verification  replacements  cost  signatures  position of multiple crests  seals, watermarks, holograms and other features  style and language
