Sacraments Chapters 15-18

Pentecost On the fiftieth day after Easter, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles. We celebrate that all those who believe in Jesus can receive the same outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The laying on of hands and anointing with chrism are signs of the Holy Spirit's presence. Chrism- perfumed oil consecrated or blessed by a bishop. - it highlights the name, "Christian" which means "anointed." Confirmation

candidates- people preparing for Confirmation. sponsor- someone who can be involved in their preparation for Confirmation and who will help them to grow in faith. - must be at least 16 years old and received the Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

The bishop confirms each candidate by laying his hand on the candidate's head, tracing the sign of the cross on the candidate's forehead with chrism and calling by name, saying, "Be sealed wih the Gift of the Holy Spirit."

Eucharist Mass- the celebration of the Eucharist. We gather at Sunday Mass(the pre- eminent/ greatest day) to listen to the Word of God and take part in the Eucharist. The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Penance and Anointing of the Sick Jesus is like us in all ways but sin. consience- the ability to know the difference between good and evil, right and wrong. Through the Sacrament of Penance, our relationship with God is strengthened and restored.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick helps unite a sick or dying person to the passion of Christ.

Sacrament of Matrimony In this Sacrament, the bride and groom confer the sacrament of eachother, and Jesus acts through them and through their promise to always love and be true to each other. The priest or deacon is the official witness of the sacrament on behalf of the Church.

The couple exchanges vows of faithfulness.

Holy Orders deacon- assists bishops and priests in the service of the Church. priest- ordained to preach to Gospel and serve the faithful. bishop- received the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and continues the Apostle's mission of leadership and service.

The laying on of hands and anointing with christm are ritual gestures used in the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders
