3 Challenges now….  Cambridge – compact, dynamic, worldwide renown  Population - 123,900(2011) to 150,000 in 2031  Estimated 33,585 homes & 44,000 jobs to 2031  Transport is still one of the biggest challenges ‘

4  The problem is not the success of Cambridge but how to manage it  In terms of transport:  Limited space  Too many cars  Insufficient attractive alternatives  Incentive to use alternatives?  Combined, these lead to worsening conditions The problem

5  We have, however, been successful in containing the problem  Traffic entering Cambridge stable  The central area is largely traffic free  Highest proportion of cyclists  Busway and bus patronage  We are now entering a new phase Successes to date

8  Can achieve environmental and congestion improvements  Must address number of cars – growth or no growth  Carrot and stick essential  Need appropriate forms of transport  Focus on the visionary but possible  Revenue streams are vital  Growth is not a threat to this but the enabler The way forward
