Chapter 1: Matter in Motion  Motion= a change in position over time  Reference point= an object that stays in place and shows us that something is moving or has moved  Direction of motion= North, South, East, & West What is the reference point?

Speed  Speed= the rate at which something moves, the distance traveled in a certain amount of time Formula  Speed = Distance = d time t

Speed Example  Problem: A car travels 700 km in 3 hours. What is its speed? Speed = distance = d = 700 km = 233 km/hr time t 3 hours

Average Speed Formula  Average speed= total distance total time

Velocity  Velocity= the speed traveled in a certain distance, must include direction of motion! Formula  Velocity = distance = d time t  Example: 65 miles/ hour east

DON’T GET CONFUSED!  Speed and velocity ARE NOT the same!  Speed is distance in time. Velocity is distance in time WITH direction.

Review Questions: 1.What is a reference point? 2.What 2 things must you know to determine speed? 3.What is the difference between speed and velocity?
