2 Motion: Can be defined as movement. 1. Motion is everywhere. 2. Example: Car moving, trees swaying, atoms moving to produce heat. Motion is relative: Consider the motion of an object with regards to another object. Example 1: A shuttle said to travel at 8km/hr is travelling relative to the Earth. Example 2: A racing car at 500km/hr is travelling relative to the tracks. Example 3: Example 4:

4 Rate Example 1: 10 cars passed in 2 hours. Example 2: 20 jumps in 5 seconds. Example 3: 5mi/hr Example 4: Rate can be defined as: - How fast or slow something is happening. - A quantity divided by time - How much of something is happening in a given amount of time. - How much something is changing in a given amount of time.

6 Practice Problems 1. What is the speed of a car, if it travels 20m in 150 seconds. 2. Calculate the distance travelled by a car, if its recorded speed is 50mi/hr and the time taken is 3 hours. 3. Calculate the time taken by Tina to travel 20km at a speed of 52km/hr.

8 Practice Problems 1. If Sam swims 0.5Km in 30 minutes, find his speed in Km/min. 2. If a car’s speed is recorded at 15mi/hr, find its speed in m/hr. 3. A car is travelling at 30mi/hr. Find its speed in m/s. 4. A car travels 20m North for 120 seconds. It then travels 30m East for 200 seconds. Calculate the average speed of the car. 5. Find the distance a car travelled if it takes 3 hrs to get to its destination from its starting point. The car is travelling at an average speed of 20mi/hr. 6. Find the time taken by Lisa to travel 20 Km at 3km/s.
