Introduction to Velocity Notes: Velocity Assignment: Velocity Challenge Wrapping Up… – Why is there a compass on this page? – How is velocity different than speed?

Explain this motion using appropriate vocabulary. A person riding a bike is an example of motion because….. Her position changes over time.

Explain this CHANGING motion using appropriate vocabulary. A car hitting a wall is changing motion because… ….it slows down over time.

Speed Formulas

Speed What is the speed of a car that travels 150 km in 3.00 hrs? Speed = Distance / Time Speed = 150km / 3.00 hr Speed = 50 km/hr

Distance What distance will a car traveling 65 km/hr travel in 3.0 hrs? Distance = Speed x Time Distance = 65km/hr x 3.0 hr Distance = 195 km

Time How long will it take to go 150 km traveling at 50 km/hr? Time = Distance / Speed Time = 150 km / 50km / hr Time = 3 hours

Notes: Velocity Speed is rate of change of an object’s position over time. Velocity is speed and direction of motion.
