2 2 2 Accessing the office remotely This step by step guide will take you through  Setting up a VPN connection to the office in Windows XP  Using the VPN connection to connect to a remote server using terminal services Before you can connect you need:  The network address of the vpn (eg vpn.domain.co.uk)  Your network username and password  The network address of the remote terminal server (eg 192.168.32.67 or DCSE1SrvVTS1)

4 4 4 Step 1. - Setting up a VPN: Windows XP  Click Start  Connect To  Show All Connections

5 5 5 Step 2. - Setting up a VPN  Double Click ‘New Connection Wizard’  When the wizard window opens, click next.  Or if this isn’t available  Click Create a new connection under Network tasks  Please note that depending on the version of Windows you are running the following screens may look slightly different. However these instructions should work in each case.

6 6 6 Step 3. - Setting up a VPN  Select ‘Connect to the network at my workplace’  Click Next

7 7 7 Step 4. - Setting up a VPN  Select ‘Virtual Private Network Connection’  Click Next

8 8 8 Step 6. - Setting up a VPN  In nearly all circumstances, you do NOT want to dial any initial connection  Click Next

9 9 9 Step 7. - Setting up a VPN  Enter the hostname you have been given. This may be a name such as vpn.domain.co.uk or an IP address such as 87.34.243.3  Click Next

10 10 Step 8. - Setting up a VPN  Type a name for the connection (this can be anything, make it memorable)  Click Next

11 11 Step 9. - Setting up a VPN  Select ‘My use only’ (Default)  Click Next

12 12 Step 10. - Setting up a VPN  Tick ‘Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop’so that you can double click the icon on your desktop to launch the VPN later on.  Click Finish – you are done!

13 13 Changing VPN settings  If you need to change settings to your connection later on  Click Start > Connect To > Show All Connections

14 14 Changing VPN settings  Find the connection you wish to change  Right click on it and select Properties

15 15 Changing VPN settings  Alter any settings you need to. On the General tab you will find the VPN endpoint hostname.

17 17 Step 1. - Connecting to the remote server  Make sure you are connected to the Office using the VPN connection just created  Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote desktop connection

18 18 Step 2. - Connecting to your desktop & Applications  Click ‘Options’ to get the window shown below  In the field Computer type the network name of the server you have been given.  Click Save As

19 19 Step 3. - Connecting to your desktop & Applications  Change the location to the Desktop  In the field File Name type something to remember the name of the remote connection  Click Save  On the previous screen click Cancel

20 20 Step 1. - Starting your connection the office  On the desktop you will have the following two icons.  Double click MRFS 1

21 21 Step 2. - Starting your connection to the office  At the login window enter the username and password you have been given to connect.  Click Connect  If successful you will see a pop box by the clock saying you are now connected.

22 22 Step 3. - Starting your connection to the office  Double Click the remote desktop icon (eg MRFS 2.RDP below) located on your desktop  If presented with a warning box as shown, click Connect.

23 23 Step 4. - Starting your connection to the office  Enter your normal username and password,  Click Ok  You will then have your usual desktop and applications as if you were in the office.
