2 School-wide Vocabulary Focus Goals Improve student word knowledge -increase exposure to unknown vocabulary words Develop students’ interest in words -motivate students to learn new words and find meaning Develop word attack strategies for unknown words -knowing how to gain meaning from context clues is essential to improving reading comprehension Develop strong vocabulary for improving writing -interesting writers have an extensive vocabulary Create word awareness -recognize students for learning new words

3 Class Word Jars each classroom has a word jar posted outside classroom student adds new vocabulary word & meaning using a sticky note to the word jar Mrs. Harris will collect sticky notes weekly one student a week will be recognized during announcements Established, Acquainted, Unknown each classroom has a chart student identify a known word that have seen or heard over and over student researches and find acquainted and unknown words to add Teachers place these in Mrs. Harris’ box and add them to the school-wide poster Student will be recognized during announcements School-wide Vocabulary Activities Established, Acquainted, Unknown Word Jars

4 Wacky Word Wall each week a K-2 & a 3-5 word will be announced the word, meaning, and picture will be added to the word wall near the cafeteria Sylvie’s Word Web Word web with a multiple meaning word posted Students can identify other meanings for the word and post the meaning on the web Students can also give ideas for the web by writing their word and multiple meanings Teachers place these in Mrs. Harris’ box Student will be recognized during announcements School-wide Vocabulary Activities Sylvie’s Word Web Wacky Word Wall
