1 INFO 3: Use of ICT In The Digital World Topic 8: Development Methods (Stages of the SDLC) Electronic Chapter: 9

2 Starter Activity (10 Mins) Independently, list down answers to the following (5mins): - – Factors contributing to the success of projects – Factors contributing to the failure of projects – Advantages of teamwork – Disadvantages of teamwork Now pair up and tick off all matching answers. In a different coloured pen, add to your answers, if the person you are working with has another answer that you don’t. (5 mins)

3 Objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: - – Understand the stages of the System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) – Understand and identify the tasks undertaken in each stage of the SDLC – Understand the first three stages of the SDLC in detail

4 Exam Practice Complete the diagram below by inserting the omitted stages of the system development life cycle in the correct order. (4 marks, Jan 2013)

5 Assessment Objectives (Outcome) Grade E/D Standard: Be able to list all the stages of the SDLC and achieve more than 40% of the exam style question. Grade C/B Standard: Be able to briefly describe the first three stages of the SDLC and some of the tasks undertaken at each stage. Achieve 60% or more of the exam style question. Grade A Standard: Be able to describe all the stages of the SDLC in detail, by making referring to examples of the tasks and methods that are undertaken during each stage. Achieve 80% or more in the exam style questions.

6 Activity 1 – SDLC Stages (10 Mins) Using the sort cards put the stages of the SDLC into order and complete the following diagram: You may need to carry out research in order to identify the SDLC stages in order…

7 Activity 2 – Match the Stages (15 Mins) Using the sort cards in activity 1 match the stages with their appropriate meanings put these into your notes. The client and/or users should be involved in every stage of the SDLC. Discuss with your partner how client/users could be involved in each stage of the SDLC and add these to your notes.

8 Activity 3: SDLC Stages (10 minutes) You now have a basic understanding of each SDLC stage. Get into pairs. Between you conduct further research into each SDLC stage, finding out more of the following information: – Additional information about what each stage is about. – Examples of some of the tasks a team of analysts undertake at each stage. Ensure you are thorough with your research as you will need to feed this back to your peers.

9 Activity 4 – Exam Style Questions (9 Mins) 1.Name three steps in the SDLC. (3 marks, Folens) 2.For each step name in the first question, describe the steps involved. (6 marks, Folens)

10 Summary 3-2-1 Name 3 stages of the SDLC and briefly explain the purpose of each stage you have identified. Give 2 examples for each stage of what tasks are undertaken in any 3 stages of the SDLC. Name the SDLC stages in ORDER.
