2  What is Memory?  Process by which we recollect prior experiences and information and skills learned in the past  Explicit Memory- clear specific information- Episodic/Semantic  Episodic Memory  Memory of a specific event you took place at or experienced  Semantic Memory  General knowledge that people remember, cannot remember when knowledge was gained. Ex. alphabet  Implicit Memory  Skills or procedures you have learned. Ex. Swimming, riding bike

3  Encoding  Translation of information into a form in which it can be stored  OTTFFSSENT  Visual Codes- memorize what you see  Acoustic Codes- repeat it and remember auditory code  Semantic Codes-makes sense of the letters  Storage  Maintenance Rehearsal- repeating information  Elaborative-relating new information to make it meaningful  Retrieval  Locating stored information

4  Sensory Memory  Immediate recording of information we get from our senses  Short-term Memory  The bridge between sensory memory and long term memory  Long-Term Memory  Contains vast amount information that we want or need to remember for a longer period of time.  Ex. 923

5  Forgetting  Can occur at any one of the three stages of memory  Basic Memory Tasks  Recognition-identifying objects or events encountered before  Recall- bring it back to mind  Relearning- relearn fairly quickly  Amnesia - Memory loss  Infantile Amnesia- loss of memories (episodic) before the age of 3  Anterograde- trauma that prevents the forming of new memories  Retrograde- forget the period leasing up to the truma
